from the book: Masters and Miracles – By Liliane Ritchie

Foreword

The message of this book is to reveal some of the immense  resources of the human  soul and spirit. It is about choosing  love and wisdom,  connecting with   powerful,  all-knowing  forces   from   Above which   sustain   and  intervene  for  us  in  infinite ways. It is getting  acquainted with these spiritual forces that assist with events in our lives.

My dear  husband  Joshua  and  I, in the course  of our lives in California, New York and Israel,  were blessed to bond in deep love with great Masters, extraordinary Rebbes radiating an indescribable power.    Their    inner    blissful    joy   was communicated to  us  by  just  being  in  their presence.  These soul giants were passionately devoting    every   moment    of   their   lives   to   the service  of God and man.  They were selfless,  truly humble people, even when many people were constantly waiting  for a turn  to speak  with  them for  just  a few  moments. We  would  like  to share with  you  stories  that  contain  unique  accounts  of their  lives  as  well  as  our  personal   experiences with them.

Secretly  or not, there  are many  questions people ask themselves, such  as: ”What  is the purpose  of my life?”   “How can I overcome fears?” “Help others?”  “How  can I begin to connect  with God?” “Trust  in God’s  love and protection?” “How  can I

experience joy? Grow Stronger? Create loving relationships?”

Some chapters in this book are addressing these questions with healing  and empowering answers. You will find them under the titles:

Connecting with our Infinite Source ~ Accessing blissful love ~ Inviting miracles into our lives ~ Blessing   with   love   ~   Prayer,   a  gift   from   the Infinite   ~  From   realms   of  Infinite   Joy  ~  Our power  of Higher  Awareness ~ What do you really want, Forever? ~ Love’s Higher Vision in Relationships  ~  Experiencing  the   presence   of God ~ and much more.

Joshua  and I had started  searching for life’s answers in our teens. We both shared the same longing  for true spiritual  values and a meaningful way   of   life.   We   yearned    to   serve   a   greater purpose.  I believe this is what was our instant connection when we first miraculously met in Geneva   while  Joshua  was  touring   Europe.   And this is what deepened our loving relationship in marriage  over the years.

When we met, Joshua was just entering medical school at the University of California in San Francisco. We soon realized  that the only way we could receive  the guidance  we desired  was to look for role models,  for people  who radiated  true joy, real  loving-  kindness   and  strength.   We  yearned

to find  someone  who  could  inspire  this  love  and joy and transmit  it to others.

The   question   was:   Where?   And   How? Fortunately, within a few years, our quest was answered in better  ways than we could  ever have dreamed.  We will forever be grateful to Rabbi Shlomo   Carlebach  z”l,  the  only  Rabbi  in  those times to make himself publicly available on stage sharing    his   music,   stories   and   wisdom    from Torah. He was reaching out to the world and especially to  Jewish  audiences, reminding them of  their  forgotten  spiritual  roots.  From  the moment we listened to his soul-healing melodies and songs, our lives began transforming rapidly. Over  the  years  we have  been  immensely blessed by   his   constant    profound,  gentle   radiance    of loving  kindness, inspiring  our  souls  to soar  with joy.

In the following  years we were also privileged to bond  in  lasting,   loving  friendship  with  another great Chassidic Rebbe,  known  as the Amshinover Rebbe  z”l,  in  Jerusalem. Later  on  we  were  also able to connect  with other revered  great Masters.

In the company of these extraordinary Rebbes, explorers of higher worlds of soul and spirit, we realized   what   boundless  potential   our   Creator has  given  each  of  us.  We  became  aware  of  the wonder of our inner self, this mystery and depth called  our  soul,  a  spark  from  the  Infinite   One.

We  embraced  the  invaluable  legacy  of  our spiritual  heritage.

We   have   also   been   privileged  at  times   to  be hosting  Rabbi  Shlomo  Carlebach in our home  at

613  N.  Las  Palmas   in  Los  Angeles   on  several

occasions. Occasionally, even today, complete strangers  walk  up to me here  in Israel  saying:  “I was at your home more than thirty years ago in California. It completely changed my life. Rabbi Carlebach was teaching  there.”

Holy men have a way of accessing the powerful refined  Light  from  Above  and  transmitting it to our world.   Many people, even if they know little about these giant souls, or never met them, are magnetically drawn towards  their spiritual radiance.       In  our  experience  this  brings immediate transformative benefits. We can commune in our heart with the intensity  of their loving devotion, we can feel more trusting and content.   We  can  discover   that  life  is  precious, that  our  own  life  has  important value  and meaning.    New insights will come pouring in, granting us the ability to see things from a much more  joyous,  loving,  wider  perspective, giving  us the impetus to act accordingly.  We can embrace beautiful  truths. We can get together  in a spirit of acceptance, loving  connections and support.   We can become  much  more  creative  in our thoughts and  our  situations.   Our  life can  become  zestful,

graced     with     beautiful     sweetness,    harmony, beauty and comforting experiences.

Over the years, being connected with these holy mentors,   Joshua   and  I  have  moved       through many   life  transformations;  yet  it  is  only   now, years  later,  that  looking   back,  we  can  begin  to share our experiences with others.

Holy  Rebbes,  sages,  tsaddikim and  all  their devoted   students,   men   and   women,   are constantly seeking  ways to bless humankind with gifts  of  understanding,  gifts  of  precious   truths. They long to awaken  us to our sacred destiny,  our ability  to  build  a  personal,   trusting,  loving, soaring   relationship  with  the  Supreme   Eternal One,   the   One   whose   Love   is   vast   enough   to sustain  the lives of 7 billion people in our world.

We can learn so much being in the presence of a Rebbe,  just  by  watching   the  way  he  moves,  the way he prays and connects in immense love with others,  the  way  he  opens  their  heart  and transforms them. This teaches us more in a few minutes  than  years  of spiritual  search.  We  soon begin to trust and learn to be guided and strengthened  as  we   connect   with   our   Creator with reverence, love and devotion.  This heart connection is  above  and  beyond  what  the  mind can fully understand. It is immensely more satisfying.

Sometimes the easiest way to understand and receive answers to our questions is by paying attention  to  the  mystifying interventions happening  in  our   times,   events   mostly   taking place in Israel.

Holy people, known or unknown, are constantly intervening on our behalf for the welfare and protection of mankind.   They  do  this  in spite  of all the resistances and madness  going on in our world.     They   are  acting   like  lightning   rods   to prevent disasters.      They transmute the overwhelming  dark  energies  of  hatred  that countless   thousands  are  so  easily   brainwashed into.  They  turn  circumstances around  to prevent the devastation of wars.

Through  the intensity  and loving  commitment of their lifetime’s  prayers they are connected with Higher   Realms   of  Light   and   immense   power. They merge with the longing and prayers of multitudes and lift them up to the eternal dimensions of peace and compassion from the Infinite One. Their whole being radiates with this peace.    It  gets  communicated  to  their  students and  hundreds of  thousands  of  others  willing  to open their heart. Trough this they invite divine protection  to  manifest   for  their  people  and  for the world.

The secret power of Divine Intervention and protection for Israel and mankind  comes through

many channels.  Great Masters have said that our every act of kindness,  care and friendship  can tip the scale toward divine intervention.  I believe its most powerful  force manifests  through  the merit of   all   the   people   who   dedicate   their   lives   in assisting others – selfless perseverant, humble people   such  as  some  health  care  providers,   or kindly teachers,  as well as all the courageous soldiers  who are ready to risk their lives anytime to defend their nation.   People such as devoted parents, public servants, creative minds, writers, musicians,  housewives and countless others involved  in all kinds of professions or none.   This is so, no matter whether they are religiously observant   or  not,  able  to  pray  or  not,  aware  or not.

Day  after  day,  year  after  year,  they  are  serving others  with  the  desire  to  make  life  easier,  safer and more inspired  for them.

Their   faithful    commitment   is   the   merit,   the energy  of selfless  love that brings  down  the blessings  from  on High.   Their  merit  is the force that   counteracts   the   darkness   of   our   chaotic world.   For   it  is  known   that,   in  the   awesome higher dimensions of Life, the Wisdom of the Supreme  One knows all our thoughts,  sees all our positive   choices,   desires   and  actions   and responds     to    them    in    many    pathways     yet unknown,  pathways  that  foster  life,  healing, growth and abundance.

Many events and circumstances in Israel defy rational explanations:

How  do  the  people   in  Israel   keep  their  spirit strong  in spite of 6 wars in the past 60 years and the  constant  threats  proclaimed  from  their Muslim  neighbors  banding  together?  These nation’s  conglomerate  military  power  is enormous!  They have amassed  the wealth  of trillions of dollars over the years from their oil resources.  They  use  it now  to effectively  control the  media,  even  in  the  western  world,  with  its subtle brainwashing as well as many politicians worldwide. This is so much more than we know. They   occupy   a  land   mass   hundreds   of   times vaster  than  this  tiny  island  of  democracy   ~  the Holy Land!

Who can explain the mysterious incidents that prevented   the  invasion,   occupation,  terror,  and mass murder that has been attempted again and again  over  six  wars  against  the  people  of  Israel since 1948?

We can watch some previous movies over the internet,  such as:

In   1967,   Egypt’s   President   Nasser   was proclaiming over the media the end of the nation of Israel  while  displaying  huge  military  parades. Four  Hundred   Egyptian  super  fighter  jets  were ready to take off and devastate  the cities of Israel. Yet,  amazingly  within  a few  hours,  these  planes

were  all  rendered   harmless,  even  before  taking off!  How is it that one thousand tanks advancing toward   Israel’s   borders   were   stopped   in  their tracks  and  one  hundred   thousand  foot  soldiers were retreating, panic stricken?  This happened within   96  hours!   All  this   notwithstanding  the other  attacks  and invasion  on Israel  from Jordan and Syria! (see chapter  8)

In  1980,   within   six  days,   dramatic   air  battles took  place  between  Syrian  MiG15  super  jet fighters,  and a few Israeli  F15 and F16 super  jets. One after the other,  eighty  six of the Syrian  MiGs went down in flames while each Israeli plane returned  safely  to its base!   No one could  explain how it happened, including the Israeli  pilots  who landed back, in a state of awe.

During  the 1991 Gulf War, Saddam  Hussein  fired

50  Scud  missiles   toward   Israel  and  more  than

4000  buildings  were  destroyed or damaged.   All the people of Israel, except for one, were miraculously saved. (See chapter  10)

This  is not  beginning to mention  the  many hundreds of other incidents, known  or unknown, of miraculous divine interventions occurring over the years.

A  few   years   ago   in  the   United   States,   at  the American Military Academy, a high ranking Commander  was  giving  a  course  to  officers   on

the  tactics  and  strategies of offense  and  defense used in different  battles  in the history  of wars. At one point one student asked: “Could you please address the wars in Israel in our times?” The Commander  snapped   back:   “There   is  nothing here  to  talk  about.     With   this  people,   we  are dealing  with inexplicable miracles.”

You  will  find  many   of  these   events   related   in chapters  8,  10,  12,  13,  14,  15,  17,  21,  22,  23,  24,

40.

Jews  in  general   are  always  yearning   for  peace. They  loathe  the insanity  of mass  aggression, tyranny and brainwashing into hatred and war. Many of them have lost family members in the holocaust.    They  realize  and  know  they  have  a duty  to  empower  their  people  when  being attacked.    They   are   prepared    for   it.   They   are fiercely   determined  not   to   be   victimized  any longer.  Above  all, their  highest  dream  is to build a better world for themselves and for all people. They long for messianic times of Light and Peace between   all  nations,   blessing   all  mankind   with new beginnings, abundance and greater  wisdom.

You  may  ask:  “How  do I invite  miracles  into  my own life?

Remember – miracles happen through the mysterious bonds of our soul and spirit with the Infinite,  Eternal  One, Source  of life and love, who

created   our  very  being.  When  we  connect   with our  Source,  we can  be blessed  with  the privilege of receiving  miracles.  Sometimes they happen  on the  spot,  or  later  on  in  ways  we  did  not  expect. Most    definitely   collective    prayer    creates    an energy   that   brings   forth   divine   protection  for entire nations.

Miracles  are  always  beneficial. Multitudes of people    can   attest    to   that!       Miracles    always abound   on  behalf   of  mankind.  Awesome heavenly  powers are intervening to prevent the destruction of  our  beautiful  planet.  Today  more than ever our world is being threatened by some cruel   leaders   who   are   crazed   for   power   and armed with weapons  of mass destruction.

Praying  together  for  guidance, strength  and blessings   is  something  that  is  part  of  everyday life in the religious  Jewish  world.  It has  been  so for  millennia.  It  has  been  so  for  multitudes  of other     well-meaning    people,     throughout    the world,   from   other   religious   or   spiritual traditions, or none.  From  the depths  of our heart we are all joining  together,  praying  and yearning for a new Light to shine over mankind, bringing peace,  love,  friendship,  respect,  cooperation, healing  and abundance for all nations.

Remembering  our  great  teachers  and  holy Rebbe’s  radiance  of loving  kindness  is reminding us  that  we  are  created   to  express   these  divine

qualities   of  love,   joy,  peace   and  wisdom,   and when  we  do,  our  prayers  become  spontaneous, joyful  and powerful.  Miracles  come  our way.  We can sense that we are blessed  with a far-reaching future destiny of growth, exploration and transformation, with resources and support way beyond our present understanding.

The Light of Faith, Love and higher awareness is dawning   on  our  entire   world   more  than  ever. There is a great hunger for spiritual growth and experience.  Over   the   past   few   years   in  Israel alone,  hundreds   of  thousands   are  returning   to their  true  connection with  a caring,  loving  God, and  are seeking  to live  accordingly. They  realize that choosing  to love God as well as loving people opens  the  door  to the  great  blessings  of joy and well being, and allows them access to divine guidance.

Scientific  research  on the human brain has found that our brain has enormous  potential. Most people barely use more than 3 to 5% of their brain capacity.  Our brains are composed  of billions of neurons  representing our thoughts, concepts,  sensations  and images. And the interactions between  these neurons  can be multiplied  many fold. Our brain is a dormant genius!

This is addressing  the mystery of our brain. What about the dormant  power of our heart?

22

According to research,  it has been found that our heart’s electro-magnetic field is 5,000 times greater  than that of our brain.  The scientific community realizes  it has yet to fathom  the awesome  transcendent powers  of our soul and spirit. These are the elements  that fulfill our most essential  needs for life, for joy, for peace, love

and happiness.  We have been blessed  with

infinite  wondrous resources awaiting  each of us.

Modern   physics   is  revealing   many   discoveries that are confirming the teachings of sages and kabbalists from past millennia.  It acknowledges that  the universe  depends  on a higher consciousness that continuously creates,  sustains and  co-ordinates all  the  material  and  energy  in the  universe.      This   is  essentially  the  Chasidic view of continuous creation.

Quantum  theory   brings   forth  the  concept   that man  is the pre-planned goal  of the cosmos  from its   beginning,   since    “for    physical    reality    to emerge  from  a potential  to actual  state  requires the  participation of a conscious observer.”   This is a modern paraphrase of the ancient Jewish teaching,  “For my sake was the world created.”

Many have heard about the personal experiences reported by thousands, during a near-death experience (NDE)  as well as in countless  mystical revelations.  As we are paying attention to these testimonies    and    learning     about     them,     our

confidence  is  strengthened.  We  can  trust   that when our time comes to leave this world, we will continue   being  fully  alive  and  expanding  as  we reach  the  next  wondrous  higher  realms  of awesome beauty, creativity and love yet to be discovered.  These   realms   are   our   true   home. When  we  know  this  we  can  live  our  lives  here with  less  fears,  greater   joy,  increasing  courage, peace and beneficial actions.

Someone   designed  a  cute  T-shirt  with  the inscription:  “Be   patient   with   me.   God   is   not finished  with me yet.” We can always  start afresh and  forge  ahead  toward  new  wondrous discoveries.

May we all join together  with the untold  millions of  other  people  who  desire  peace  in  our  world, who are yearning for mankind to be blessed with higher  awareness,  the  awareness  of  God’s Presence,  blessed   with   trust   in   the   awesome divine   Master   Plan   of  infinite   kindness   yet  to unfold and be discovered.

May this Light of awareness ever increase  in our heart  and  mind,   helping   us  connect   with  each other and hold each other up with love.  May this Light    rapidly    expand    among    many    millions more, and keep growing  until it is reaching  out to every nation in our world.

May we all begin to perceive  our own magnificent purpose  and blissful  potential, together.

One  of  our  greatest  blessings, for  Joshua  and  I was to be connected in deep bonds of loving friendship  with  Rabbi  Shlomo   Carlebach,  since

1966.     This     heart     and     soul     connection    is

continuing to this very day. When we listen to his songs over our CD’s, his melodies and stories penetrate our heart  even  deeper,  as if he is right here with us. This is exactly  as he wanted  it to be. His life-long  dream was to reach out to every soul in need  of spiritual  support  and  encouragement. The  CD’s  of  his  concert   appearances  are  to  be found  in almost  every  available  Jewish  book  and gift store.

Whenever his songs are included  in the prayer services   in  any  synagogue  services   every Shabbos,  the attendance soon increases dramatically.

Like a blazing  trail of heavenly  joy, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach,  the  legendary  wandering  messenger of God, circled our world with his hauntingly beautiful    melodies    and    unique    soul    stirring stories     conveying    worlds     of    teachings    and

spiritual   insights   within   a  few   words.   In   the course of his life, he appeared  in thousands of concerts  and gatherings on several  continents lifting multitudes to higher realms of loving awareness and joy. He became a legend and was called  the  “Dancing  Rabbi”  or  the  “Singing Rabbi.”  He called  himself  the “Street  Rabbi.”  He was heard to say: “If the sick won’t come to the hospital,   I  go  to  them.  If  people  won’t  come  to the synagogue, I go out in the street to them.” Anyone   who   had   ever   seen   Rabbi   Shlomo   in action,   even   those   who   wanted   nothing   to  do with  religion,   loved  him  and  held  him  in  high esteem.  He was a singing  prophet  for our times, a giant in loving-kindness.

Rabbi Carlebach composed many hundreds of songs,  each endowed  with a unique,  subtle  gentle power  of uplifting  the soul. Within  a few minutes of his appearance, his audience  was drawn  into a deep  meditative state  of receptivity, with  a sense of peace,  trust,  and well-being. People  relaxed  in an  aura  of  quiet  calmness.  At  other  moments, they would be stirred with rhythmic songs of rejoicing.     The  audience   would  clap,  sing  along and   be  swept   up  in  a  wave   of  sparkling   joy, flowing from heart to heart. It was an uplifting, healing,    purifying    kind   of   joy.   People   would beam at each other, wishing only the highest blessings  for one another.

Our first encounter

Like thousands of other  young  people  during  the sixties,   my   dear   husband    Joshua   and   I   had already begun searching for life’s meaning  and purpose  while  in our  teens.  In those  days,  there were hardly any Jewish books of inspiration translated    into    or    written     in    English     for beginners on their spiritual quest except for the prayer book and the works of Joshua Heshel. Eventually   we   realized    that   the   only   way   to receive satisfactory guidance  was to look for someone  who  radiated  true  joy,  real  loving- kindness, higher vision and strength.  We went looking   for  role  models   who  could  inspire   this love and joy. Since  Joshua  was then  a student  at the UCSF  medical  school  in San Francisco, those special role models  were not so readily available.

Very   fortunately,  in  1966,   an  event   happened which,  within  a few hours,  transformed our lives. We had been invited  to an engagement ceremony celebrated in a large penthouse complete  with a garden,  trees  and a fish pond.  It was perched  on the top floor of a high building  on top of a hill in San Francisco. We arrived late and soon found ourselves  standing  in  the  dim  light  with  a large circle   of  about   100  people   listening   to  deeply stirring  melodies, permeating the heart, melodies

imbued with sweetness and depths. Melodies initiated  by someone  in the center  of the circle. It was  Rabbi  Shlomo  Carlebach. Time  stopped. There  was  a  unique  gentleness and  kindness   in the  air  we  had  never  experienced before,  a quietness and deep peace,  mingled  with our own sense  of wonder,  surprise,  and discovery. We felt we   were   beholding  something  extremely  lofty and  refined,  something  new.  Yet  we  sensed  we had  always  been  longing  for it. We hardly  dared to believe it was really happening. The melodies lifted   us  from   a  place   of  elation   to  a  state   of spiritual    ecstasy    as   we   swayed    arm   in   arm, singing our hearts out.   We became one with the melodies,  one   with   each   other,   one   with   the prayers   and  their  lyrics:     “For  the  sake  of  my brothers  and  friends,  for  the  sake  of  my  sisters and friends, please let me ask, please let me sing, peace to you…”

From that evening on, we felt irresistibly drawn toward the sacred wellsprings of our Jewish heritage.   We were blessed with the soul-healing support of our most extraordinary mentor and friend, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Through his immense  kindness, we were introduced to the wondrous and privileged world of Sages, of holy Masters.   We became  aware  that there was a vast ocean   of  soul-healing  teachings  in  our  Jewish roots. For this we will be eternally  grateful.

In  those  times  Reb  Shlomo,  (as  he  was affectionately called,) was the first rabbi ready to travel to all corners of the globe in order to be in touch with young people like us.  Through his meaningful,   heart-warming   approach,   he reached  out and inspired  thousands of people  by giving concerts and inspiring them with powerful stories permeated with depths of insight.

Being around Reb Shlomo also brought us the enduring   and   deep   friendships  of  others   who were on the same spiritual quest. We spent many unforgettable hours in joyful togetherness, in heartfelt  prayers  and singing  during  our Shabbatons (Sabbaths spent together.)    One particular song would carry us into timeless dimensions: “The  whole  world  is waiting  to sing the  Song  of  Shabbos,   and  I  am  also  waiting  to sing  the  Song  of  Shabbos.”  Shabbos   (Sabbath) also means the blissful state of awareness from transcendent realms.

Even  though  Joshua  had  a  promising  and lucrative  career ahead of him as a physician in Pediatrics at that time,  we knew  we had to move to Jerusalem. We settled there with our 3 young children in 1968. Many of our dear friends soon joined us as well.

For so many people, Reb Shlomo was a most magnanimous, selfless,  patient,  devoted  teacher, a giant Soul Master whose brilliant, profound knowledge revealed  to us glimpses  into the truth,

the    reality    of    the    infinite    kindness    of    the

Almighty.

Ever so often during  quiet, golden  moments with a few dear friends,  Reb Shlomo  would  get deeply focused.  There  was  a  certain  grace  in  his demeanor, as he would gently strum heavenly sounds    on   his    guitar.    He    was    listening    to melodies   from   on  High   and   at  times   echoing them  through  his  voice,  until  a new  song  would be born.

Each of Reb Shlomo’s  melodies  is completely unique, a healing balm to countless  people. The gentle power of these sounds  and words of prayer open  gateways  for  us  to  receive  the  ecstatic  joy, grace and harmony of higher realms of consciousness. As we listen to these songs in a prayerful,   receptive    mode,   we   can   feel   from within the call of the Eternal Presence.  This call reaches  out  to  us  from  beyond,  past  the restlessness and chaos  of our world,  calling  to us from  the  deep,  calling  us  “Return  again,  return again,  return  to the land  of your  soul…  return  to who  you  are,  return  to  what  you  are,  return  to where you are born and reborn again…”

Connecting,    opening     doors,    gifts, blessings

For the next  28 years  (1966-1994), Joshua  and I

were   blessed   with   the  friendship  of  our   most

beloved  friend,  Reb  Shlomo.  Together  with countless  other  companions and  friends,  we basked  in  the  glow  of  this  priceless   bond.    Our lives   were   uplifted   as  we  were   showered  with gifts upon gifts of joy in an all-embracing atmosphere of safety, inner confidence and well- being. Whether  he was addressing an audience  of many thousands or just a few friends, in Reb Shlomo’s  company  we soon felt enveloped in an indescribable  peace  infused  with  the  loving Presence  of the Infinite.

Reb Shlomo  had a unique  way of reaching  people who  wanted  nothing   to  do  with  their  Judaism. Often he would somehow manage  to be invited  to sing  and  teach  at some  Ashrams  where  he knew he  would   find  many   Jews.   At  other   times,   he would  spontaneously pull out his guitar  and sing for  his  entourage in  a crowded  coffee  shop  into the  wee  hours  of  the  night.  In  the  seventies   he sang  in the  rain  on  Simchas  Torah  in Moscow’s Red Square at a time when it was extremely dangerous for a Jew with a beard  and skullcap  to do that.

Many times, after giving a concert,  he would walk over at two or three a.m. to sing for the homeless in a park near the Hudson  River, not far from his synagogue in Manhattan.

He was flown  to many  army  outposts  from  Sinai to  Lebanon   during   the  Six  Day  War,  the  Yom Kippur War and the War in Lebanon, as well as between the wars. (The soldiers were immensely precious  to him.)

In 1988  he was  the first  person  in over  70 years to go to the Soviet Union to appear in public performances of Jewish  Music.    Reb Shlomo reached   out  to  over  50,000   Soviet  Jews  in  the course   of  23  concerts!     It  was  standing   room only with hundreds waiting outside the concert hall!  All this was accomplished in three weeks! (Ever  since  then  Soviet  Jews  have  migrated   to Israel by many hundreds of thousands).

In  his  own  unique,  quiet,  gentle  style,  Reb Shlomo   voiced   deep   soulful   teachings  through his  apparently simple  heartfelt  words.  When hearing his stories, his audience was transported into  other  realms   of  time  and  space.  When  he would  speak  about  the great  Masters  of the past, we felt as if we were right there standing in their company,  allowing   their   radiance   to  penetrate and  strengthen  us,  awakening  new  faith  within us.   We   could   feel   their   awe   and   love   as   we merged   with   some   of  their   soaring   awareness and  reverence  for  the  Master   of  Creation.   Our altered   state  felt  wondrous  and  yet  it  also  felt quite natural. Our mode of thinking and feeling shifted  quite  easily,  as  if  we  had  always  known

how good it was, but had forgotten  how to get ourselves  there.

One  most  endearing  quality  about  Reb  Shlomo was  a  certain   aura  of  complete   inner  freedom. Many  significant people  in his life sought  to put great   pressure   on   him   to   conduct   his   life   in different ways. Some urged him to belong to a particular  institution,  to  teach  and  conduct himself   in   a   more   conventional   way.      Some advised  him to sing more professionally on stage, to  structure   his  work   more   efficiently.    Some begged   him  to  create  a  successful  organization and market his output to invest in savings or property.    As  much  as  Shlomo  wanted  to  make people happy and feel useful, he couldn’t allow anyone  to  own  him.  His  entire  life’s  work belonged  to God  and to each  open  and receptive soul. His boundless outpouring of loving, compassionate,  encouraging  wisdom   melted away   people’s   inner   turmoil,   allowing   them   to grow   in   strength   and   confidence  and   receive higher   guidance.     This   was   all   that   he   truly wanted.

Reaching out to all people, melting away resistances

“Kiddush  for the first meal on Shabbos? It’s too early!   What?   It’s  2:00   a.m.?   We  want  to  sing

some  more!”   The  ‘Flower   Children’   were celebrating the  Sabbath  with  Shlomo.  The  room was  packed,   the  atmosphere  intense,   receptive and   focused.   For   hours   they   had   been enraptured,   sitting   on   the   floor,   listening    to stories    about    great    Masters,    holy    men    and women,  tzaddikim and Rebbes.   The singing  was up  to high  heaven.    This  was  1967.  Reb  Shlomo had created a vibrant center of inspiration and support   in  San  Francisco  called  ‘The  House  of Love and Prayer’  for the countless  Jewish  youths who  were  searching  for  their  spiritual   identity. There  was  a big  sign  on the  entrance  door:  “We get  high   on  Shabbos”.  It  didn’t   take   long   for those  young  hippies  to realize  that  the  joy, expansion and blessings  from discovering their spiritual roots were much more attractive, safer, strengthening and promising than any kind of mind-altering  drug.   Today,   many   of  them   are living in Israel, absorbing its holy atmosphere, studying, enjoying their families and their many friends.   They  speak   about   the  “House   of  Love and  Prayer”  as the  crucial  turning  point  in their lives. Reb Shlomo  led this center for ten years.

Reb Shlomo’s great heart was reaching out to all people willing to receive.  Aside from appearing in every  corner  of  the  United  States,  he  also performed   in   India,    Australia,   Morocco,    the

South  Pacific,  South  Africa,  Latin  America,  even in  Alaska.   He   sang   in  major   concert   halls   in London,   Paris,  San  Francisco,  Los  Angeles, Boston,    Chicago,    Denver,    Miami,   Kiev, Leningrad, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Jerusalem,  Haifa,  and  Tel  Aviv,  to  name  just  a few.  He  was  also  respectfully  welcomed  in Germany,  Poland  and  Austria.  He  sang  in moshavim and distant settlements. He sang on college campuses and in parks, homes, and thousands  of  Jewish   Centers,   summer   camps, and synagogues, infusing  new depths  of meaning and   joy  during   Shabbatons  and   retreats.      He sang in palatial homes, Israeli military bases, hospitals  and prisons.  Wherever he went,  he left a powerful  imprint  that has remained in people’s hearts and minds ever since.

Foregoing all personal interests

Reb Shlomo was lavishly affectionate and caring with his wife, Neila, and their two daughters, Neshama and Nedara. He treated his wife and children  with  deep  respect,  knowing  what immensely precious souls they were. He was painfully   torn  between   his  commitment  to  his work  and  being  present  for his family.  We  often saw  him  talking  long  distance  on  the  telephone

for  hours  with  his  children,   helping   them  with their   homework.  He   often   spoke   about   them during  his concerts  and  many  times  we saw  him pray for them with utmost  devotion.

Already  in his  early  twenties,  when  he was studying at the Lakewood Yeshiva, Shlomo was considered the  star  pupil  of  the  Rosh  Yeshiva  - the   revered   Rav   Aaron   Kotler   -   and   he   was already  recognized as a genius  in delving  into the sacred  teachings of  Torah.  He  was  respected by the great  leaders  of religious  Jewry  and expected to take a role of honored  leadership. “These  years of learning were the happiest years of my life” Shlomo  told me.

Yet, in spite of all this, Shlomo was drawn to a different calling. He chose to dedicate his life to reaching   out  to  the  large  majority   of  Jews  who were   distanced  from   their   spiritual   roots.   He chose to be a humble companion, friend, and comforter,  open  and  receptive   to  each  person, gently  inviting  them to be willing  to receive. Perhaps  this was the greatest  act of courage  and love.  Yet this decision  dashed  the hopes  of many who expected  him to be a brilliant and honored future    leader.    They   were   most   apprehensive about his choice of carrying out this seemingly reckless,  bewildering role.

Reb Shlomo gave support and acceptance to everyone asking for help. Over the years, many onlookers were disconcerted watching  the motley

crew of young  people  who would  at times  appear and follow him around – disheveled, barefoot, spaced-out hippies, vagabonds, spiritual seekers, broken souls, all kinds. Shlomo saw their inner beauty,  their longings,  and their search.  He knew the  precious,  Divine  spark  residing  in  them.  He was there for them, giving from his immense reservoirs  of  love.  But  many  others  were dismayed. “How  can he allow  himself  to be seen in public like this?”

We  heard  him  say:  “There  is so much  hatred  in the world, so many lonely people in pain and confusion; I wish  I could  comfort  and  hug  each one.” And there were many people  at his concerts needing a hug.   Most of the people Reb Shlomo addressed in his public appearances were Jews alienated   from  their  Jewish   spiritual   roots.  He knew the only way for people to begin to heal and trust     was     through     a    sense     of     closeness, simplicity,   laughter    and   spontaneity.   He delighted    in   cracking    funny    jokes.    With   his unique     ease    and    grace,     he    loved     sharing insightful  stories  and  bringing   people  close together as they sang in unity, creating a non- judgmental and relaxed atmosphere of trust and willingness  to  hear  and  to  receive.   Available   to all, he was father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, best  friend,  counselor, mentor, guide,  Rabbi,  spiritual   counselor  and  Holy Master.   Each of these based on the need of each.

Opening the gates of unending inspiration

All his life Reb Shlomo  was powerfully connected with great saintly men and women, the sages and Tzaddikim  of  our  vast  and  extraordinary heritage,  the awesome  souls  that bless  our world with their  presence. Shlomo  had the gift to bring down their light, their example of compassion, wisdom  and  courage  to us,  making  it alive,  real and available. He accomplished this through the immense  love  that  permeated his  melodies, stories,  and  moments  of  focused  learning together.    Reb Shlomo created a way for our Tzaddikim to  reach  out  to  countless   thousands. He  opened  the  gates  for  his  audience   to  access the unending inspiration, nourishment and comfort  that  can  be  found  in  the  wellsprings of Torah wisdom.

Knowing  this,  Shlomo  went  through  storms  and the darkest  darkness  in this world  to be with  us, stay with us, shelter us, and illuminate our lives, bringing   us  reassurance,  laughter,   delight,   joy, light and immense  reservoirs of love. Even  today many  are experiencing his gentle  and comforting presence, bringing  to them moments of new awakenings, moments of loving  communion with our Creator  and each other.

Reb   Shlomo   identified  with   our   human condition.  He  made  himself  one  with  the yearnings of every seeking soul and yes, he was connected  with   the   Supreme,  Eternal   One   in ways we cannot conceive. This gave him extraordinary energy and a radiance that encompassed, touched, moved and illuminated countless   thousands  who  attended   his  concerts and gatherings during his fifty years of ceaseless devotion   to  his  work.  He  was  a  true  servant  of God.

In spite of his fame, Reb Shlomo was so simple – accessible especially to those in pain. The little beggar  he  met  in  the  streets  of  Manhattan  was very important to him as well as anyone  in need. The  reckless,   angry,  rebellious  youths,  the searching, yearning  souls,  the mentally  unstable, the traumatized holocaust survivors, those going through   pain,  abuse  and  tragedy,   each  found  a place in his heart. He melted with joy when he encountered  souls   thirsty   for   deeper   learning, souls yearning  to discover  the gems of Torah wisdom,   yearning   to  taste  true  knowledge.  His face   lit  up  every   time   he  would   see  children. Often  he  would  empathetically  remind  his audience   how  very  precious   children   are, pleading   for  them,  encouraging  parents   to  hug them  many  times  every  day,  exhorting and begging  teachers  to take loving care of them.

Reb Shlomo’s privileged childhood

In the course  of our close friendship, Joshua  and I  and   many   other   friends   spent   hundreds  of hours  in  Reb  Shlomo’s   company.  Strangely enough,  even  after  many  years,  he still remained a mystery  to all of us. It was extremely rare when he  would  share  what  he  felt  and  experienced in his  private   life  (except   in  an  occasional  joke). During  some  of  those  rare  occasions when Shlomo   would   share   with   his   beloved   friends some  personal   stories,   we  felt  privileged  to  be there.  The  following   accounts  are  related  to  the best of my memory:

Once,   Reb  Shlomo   shyly   gave  us  some   details about his early childhood. We learned that the Carlebach family  lived  in the  Spa  resort  town  of

‘Baden   bei  Wien’  near  Vienna.   His  father,   Rav Naftali, was the devoted rabbi of a flourishing synagogue which  was  often  visited  by  great leading   rabbis   from   distant   communities  who came in the summer  to bathe in the spa waters.

In  a  voice   filled   with   reverence,  Reb   Shlomo shared with us:

“The  happiest,  most  blissful  moments in my life, the  moments  where   I  learned   the  most,   were those when I learned the Alef Beis, (the Hebrew alphabet)  sitting  on  my  father’s  knee.  The  first

day   we  learned   about   the  letter   Alef…   it  was another  world…  I dreamed  about  Alef all night… so much there…  And the next day it was the letter Beit… Later on as I grew up, I learned  from many books, but it was never quite the same.”

“When   I  was  four  years  old,  I  was  assigned   a private  live-in  tutor  to teach  me and  my brother most  of the day.  This  was not enough  for me. In the evening  I pretended to be fast asleep  at the 7 pm curfew. My mother was very strict and had imposed   this  curfew,   but  when   the  household had retired, I would sneak upstairs to be in my teacher’s  company  to continue  learning  more Torah wisdom with him in the quiet hours of the night.”

With a slightly mischievous smile on his face, Shlomo  continued:

“Another  time, when I was six years old, the telephone rang, and as my parents  weren’t  there, I answered it. It  was  the  Archbishop of  Vienna. He  was  on  friendly  terms  with  my  father.  Soon we were  discussing Torah  together.  The Archbishop was eager to know more about Yiddishkeit and  he  learned  with  me  for  over  an hour.  Later  on he told my father  how amazed  he was with our conversation.”

“How   old  were   you  when   you  gave   your   first public address?” someone  asked.

“Six  years  old.    My  father  had  gone  away  on  a journey     and    was    absent     on    the    Sabbath. Someone was needed to give the address to the congregation during the Sabbath services. My mother  stood  me  on  a table  and  declared  that  I was  the one  assigned  to give  the speech.  So that was how I gave my first discourse on the Torah portion  of the week in a synagogue.”

Please call for help! She is going to drown herself!

“Please   do   not   do   this   to   yourself!”   Shlomo begged the young woman who was desperately swimming ahead  of him  in  the  frozen  waters  of the North Sea.

“Go  away,  let  me  die!”  She  snapped   back.  She was a good  swimmer  and  Shlomo  had  a difficult time  trying  to catch  up with  her with  his clothes still on.

Shlomo  had  guessed  right.  While  taking  a  walk on the sea shore,  he had noticed  from  a distance a group of men surrounding a young woman, laughing,    and    jeering    at   her.    Suddenly    the woman  broke  away,  ran  to  the  sea  and  jumped in. Shlomo  dashed  over and shouted  at the men: “She  is  going  to  drown  herself!    Call  for  help!”

The men only laughed.  Shlomo  tore off his shoes and coat and plunged  into the ocean.

He was running out of energy and the girl kept swimming further  out,  yet  he  managed  to catch up with her. He pleaded:  “I am not going to leave you,  but  if you  continue  like  this,  I am  going  to run out of strength  and we will both drown.”

Somehow, his words reached her. She turned around.  Only  through   the  help  of  the  Almighty were they both able to make it back to the shore. Shlomo concluded: “Thank God she was safe. I noticed that the group of jeering men was still standing    there.   They   had   watched   the   whole scene and done nothing.”

The  pained  look  of hurt  and  indignation in Shlomo’s  eyes as he was telling this story remains engraved  in my memory.

We heard  from a few sources  that Shlomo,  in the course  of his  life,  saved  many  people  from  their own despair  and self-hatred. He would  often  ask for the telephone number of people he met. Sometimes he would call on the following  day, sometimes   years    later.    Most    often    his   calls arrived   at  the  right   time,   just  at  the  moment when  the  recipient  needed  help  the  most  - sometimes  in  a  time  of  deepest   darkness.  One man   was   about   to  commit   suicide.   He  hadn’t heard  from  Shlomo  in  more  than  10  years,  yet

Shlomo    was   guided    to   call   him   just   at   the moment  he was going to take his life!

Shlomo   often   quoted   Rabbi   Nachman’s teachings. Once  he softly  gave  one  of these  over to us: “Why  do people  hate  others?  It is because they hate themselves. When people have done something really wrong,  their soul is crying.  They don’t want to hear this cry. They refuse to hear it, and   so  they   disconnect  themselves  from   their soul.  Then  their  self-hate   is  so  unbearable  that they  have  to  let  it spill  out  somewhere else  and they end up hating others.”

Miraculous escapes  from death

How did Reb Shlomo escape the Holocaust? We remember hearing  some brief accounts  from Reb Shlomo:

In 1939, my father  and mother,  my sister,  my

14 year old twin brother  Eli Chaim  and I had to escape  the Nazis  who  were  occupying Vienna.  Miraculously we  had  obtained  a permit  to travel  to Lithuania. We were  living in  a  rented   house.   We  knew  it  was  only  a matter   of   a   few   days   until   the   Germans would invade the area. To make things even worse,  my  father  was  injured.  He had  fallen

through   a  malfunctioning  hidden  trap  door on  the  floor   of  our   rented   house!   He  was badly  hurt, all bandaged and bedridden.  The following   day    Lithuanian   policemen appeared at our door to take him for interrogation. When they realized  they would have  to  carry  him  on  a  stretcher,  the policemen decided to return three days later. Before dawn on the next morning, my father took off his bandages and somehow was able to get up and  leave.  Where?  He went  to ring the doorbell  of the private  home of the Consul of Denmark at 6 am. A servant  answered the door  and  my  father   gave  him  his  greeting card. Moments later the Consul himself accompanied by his wife rushed  over to greet him.  He announced:

“You  are sent  to us directly  from  God.  If you can answer  our questions to our satisfaction, I  will  do  for  you  whatever  you  are requesting!”

“By   all   means,   it   will   be   my   honor   and pleasure  to answer  whatever you need to know.”  my father answered.

The Consul  and his wife sat him down in their private   study   and  confided   to  him:   “Early each  morning  we  both  study  the  Bible together.  We have been especially inspired  by the Psalms  of King David.  This very morning, just  a few  minutes  ago,  we  decided  to  study

the life of King David.  It was fascinating. But then   we   came   upon   the   chapter   revealing details about his outrageous affair with Batsheva. We are shocked! And very disappointed! How could  this man have done such a reprehensible thing? We are about to make   the   decision    not   to   read   from   the Psalms    any   longer.    Unless,    perhaps    you could elucidate  our questions for us.”

My father was a descendant of King David’s lineage.       He   knew   by   heart   all   the   oral teachings explaining what  really  had happened in that incident.  He certainly  knew how  to  reveal  the  greatness  and  sanctity   of King  David  with  the  information handed down to us through the centuries, giving us many factors  not yet known  to Christians.

Then   father,   who   was   also   well   versed   in history,  asked the Consul:

Were  you  closely  associated  with  the previous  King of Denmark?”

“Of  course.  I  was  one  of  his  personal advisers.”

“Tell   me,   between    us,   perhaps    you   knew about his secret extramarital affair with a woman  he  used  to  visit  every  week  in Germany?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Have   you  been   able  to  ever  confront   him with this?”

“Of course not.  I would have lost my job.”

Well  now,  let us look at King  David.  He was a powerful  King, yet he allowed someone to severely confront him. This was at a time in history when this kind of thing would never happen.    And  he  admitted   his  wrong  doing. And he fully repented  on the spot!”

The  Ambassador  and  his  wife  were  edified and    more    than    completely   satisfied.    My father received our visa to Denmark. From Denmark  we  obtained   another  visa  to England.    Soon  after  we arrived  to England, we  were  able  to board  the  last  transatlantic ship bound for New York. All this happened through  the constant  help of the Almighty.

Response to a mugger

“Give  me  your  money  fast!”  This  was  a threatening order. Shlomo was being attacked at gunpoint  at night  in the streets  of Manhattan by a “black  brother,”  as Shlomo  usually  called  them. Shlomo  looked  at  him  and  answered  with genuine   compassion:  “Oy,  my  sweet  brother!   I am  sorry  you  have  to  do  that  for  a living.  I am

also sorry that today I don’t have money on me, because today is our Sabbath and I do not carry money  on this day.”   The mugger  relaxed,  put his gun down and smiled.   Shlomo  offered:   “I will be glad  to  give  you  some  money  tomorrow  if  you come pick it up at my apartment above the synagogue on 69th  Street and West End Avenue.”

The next day, the mugger  trusted  Shlomo  enough to pick  up some  “charity  funds.”    He  left  in awe and   with   a  radically   changed   attitude   toward some  of  the  “white  folks.”  Later  on  a  few incidents  indicated  that  the  word  had  spread  in the  underground  world  not  to  hassle  this  rabbi and those associated with him.

A    message     of    love    and    peace    from

Jerusalem!” in Germany

In the 1970’s Shlomo received an invitation to perform   in  Hamburg,  Germany   at  a  Christian

‘Meeting  of the Ways’  jamboree with  Protestants of all denominations as well as Catholic  speakers.

Germany? To go sing in this main city where  just a  few  years   ago,  huge  fanatic   Nazi  rallies   had taken place? Shlomo was more than aware of the excruciating  suffering,  humiliation  and  murder of his six million  brethren  during  the Holocaust.

Who  was  left  of  the  many  thousands  of congregants and friends he and his family had known  and cherished before?  Who was left of his father’s  five  brothers,  renowned and  revered rabbis leaders of large communities in the main cities of Germany? Who was left of their many cherished children,  families and countless community members? Except  for a very few, they had all been hunted down and murdered. Reb Shlomo  was  constantly carrying  in the depths  of his   heart   the   millions   of   souls   who   endured World   War  II.  Every   so  often  he  would   speak about them in his concerts,  mentioning their dreams  as they walked  into the gas chambers.

Shlomo told us: “Going to Germany  was a hard decision  for me. I chose  to go anyway,  but first I had  to  travel  to  Jerusalem and  stay  there  for  a day to strengthen myself.  Then I flew to Germany and  arrived  at  the  jamboree meeting.  I found  a huge outdoor gathering, about 10,000 people stretched    out   on   a   vast   lawn,   mostly   young people.   Nobody   was  listening   to  the  speakers. Most  of them  were  busy  drinking  beer,  chatting with each other or with their girlfriends. I was wondering   why   I   was   there.   I   was   praying:

‘Master   of  the  Universe,  please!’   I  climbed   on stage.  I  called  out  very  loud:  ’My  dear  brothers and  sisters,  I am bringing  you a message  of love and   peace   from   the   Holy   City   of  Jerusalem!’

Suddenly    thousands   of   people   stood   up   and walked  toward  the stage.”

“I began  to sing and soon people  were joining  in, arm in arm, and singing with me. Then someone jumped  on  stage,  grabbed  the  mike  and announced: ‘I would  like to express  in the name of  the  German   people,   our  deepest   regret   and most sincere apologies for what happened to the Jewish  people’.   And  he  began  to  cry.  I  put  my arm on his shoulder  and said:

“My  dear  brother,   let  us  rebuild   together   from now on. Let us create a new future together.”

I   continued  singing   and   thousands  of   voices joined in, for hours.”

I  can  still  remember  the  awed  wonder  on Shlomo’s   face  and  in  his  voice  as  he  concluded this story.

Bagels  and Lox

To the tens of thousands of Jews who’s only affiliation  with   Judaism   was   at  the   very   best eating   bagels   and  lox,  Rabbi   Carlebach’s approach  was a window of opportunity to their spiritual   heritage.   It  introduced  them   to Chassidic teachings, tradition  and song in a way they  had never  heard  of.   But for those  schooled

in  the  strongly  disciplined  Jewish  religious tradition,  it  was  alienating  and  jarring   that  he would  hug so many  people,  including women.  In the  Jewish  halachic  law,  men  are  strictly forbidden to touch  women  except  for their  wives and close relatives.

Reb  Shlomo  was  a  descendant of  a long  line  of great  leading  Rabbis  and even  though  this world was so dear, familiar and precious to him, even greater  was  his  desire  to  reach  out  to  the  many tens  of thousands of  Jews  who  were  completely lost            to      their      Judaism      and      who      were intermarrying    at    an    alarming     rate,    almost without exception.  This ignorance was mostly caused by the destruction and fears generated during  the Holocaust as well as the seductions of the present  materialistic modern  way of life.

Reb Shlomo  was willing  to sacrifice  the respect  of his peers in order to help rescue the 90% of the Jewish population needing a connection to their spiritual  foundations. He knew they would return through an atmosphere of joy, enthusiasm, closeness  and  loving  acceptance as  long  as someone was out there calling them to.  This was before  the days  when  the kiruv  work  of reaching out was popular and before welcoming strange looking   youths  with  even  stranger   philosophies into homes for a Shabbos meal was considered possible.

Shlomo Carlebach was soon the favorite topic of heated discussions. People were offended  by his apparent  disregard of tradition  and  law and decided   he  was  just  a  showman.    Slander   can spread like wild fire.

We  heard  Reb  Shlomo   say:  “There  is  so  much hatred  in the world;  I wish  I could  hug everyone in pain.”   Reb  Shlomo  gave  heartfelt  loving  hugs to countless  men,  women  and children  as if each of them  was his own  child.   Many  people  told us his hug  was  a turning  point  in their  life.   In one of   his   recordings   Reb   Shlomo    said:   “I   have walked in the streets of many cities of the world, people  are so hungry.”  And he would  sing a song he composed to the  words  of a prophecy: “Days are  coming,   days  are  coming.   There   will  be  a hunger  in the  world.  But  the  hunger  will  not  be for bread,  and the thirst will not be for water, but to hear the word of God.”

Over the years, new doors opened for those who showed a sincere interest in studying.  Rabbi Carlebach was then able to send them to various centers   of  learning.   Some   he  sent   to  Chabad, some  to  Israel  to  search   out  Chassidic  groups, some to Neve Yerushalayim and some to various baal tshuva yeshivot in the old city of Jerusalem. Those who followed his advice invariably stayed, married  Jewish  partners  and  raised  Jewish families  in the religious,  observant way of life.

A giant in selfless  loving-kindness

Many   times   Reb   Shlomo   gave   away   his   last penny. At times he didn’t even have a way to get home  after  his  concerts!   Here  is  a story  related by  his  faithful   friend,   Itzik   Eisenstat.  He  was helping  Reb  Shlomo  at one  of his  concerts.    On that  night,  one  of  Shlomo’s   detractors  came  to the  concert.  Itzik  knew  him  well.  That  man  had often   berated   and   teased   Itzik   for   associating with Reb Shlomo, and to prove his point, he had come to the concert to spy on Reb Shlomo. He imagined   he  would   see  something  outrageous, but  all  he  saw  during   the  interim   were   many grateful  people  opening  their  hearts  to  Reb Shlomo:  parents  with  their  children,  elderly people, students,  and businessmen. Then he saw someone  sadly approaching Reb Shlomo:

“My  friend,  is there  anything  I can  do for  you?”

asked Shlomo.

“To tell you the truth Reb Shlomo,  I lost my job a few   months   ago;   I   don’t   have   the   means   to provide  for my family. We have seven children.”

Reb Shlomo  listened  intently.  He sighed deeply:

“I  am  so  sorry,  so  very  sorry…  Please  do  me  a favor.  Wait for me until the end of this concert. Please don’t leave.”

At  the  end  of  the  concert,   Shlomo   was  paid  a large check for five thousand dollars. He really needed   that   cash   as   he   was   usually   short   of money and had very few possessions of his own, except    perhaps    his    clothes    and    books.    But instead,  he discreetly signed  the  check  over  and gave it to this man even though  he had never met him before.

“Please  don’t tell anyone.”  he whispered to him.

The  detractor   was  watching   closely.   He  was  in awe. From then on, he had nothing  but praises  to say  to everyone  about  Reb  Shlomo.  Shlomo  had given  away  all  he  could  possibly  give.   This  was his only way to live.

Reversing curses

“Look  who  is  coming!  The  crazy  Shlomo Carlebach! He should  be sent to jail!”   jeered  the man lounging  on the porch  of a house  in Moshav Modiin.

“What  do you  mean?”  his consort  sitting  next  to him  announced.  “Jail  is  too  good  for  him.  He should be locked in a mental  institution!”

The gentle, young new settlers of Moshav Meor Modiin   had  been  terrified   by  these  two aggressive outlaws  carrying  military  guns.    How

did they  get there?   One  night,  without  warning, they  had  simply  taken  over  a house  which happened   to   still   be   unoccupied.     They   had moved  in and claimed  it as their  own.  What  was on their agenda?

These  were  the  first  few  months  of inexperience and   insecurity  in  the  settling   of  this   Moshav. During  the previous  years twelve different  groups of people had tried to settle there and had failed. These  outlaws  thought  it  would  be  easy  to frighten    and   discourage   these   dreaming American settlers and have them move away. Perhaps  they wanted  to take over the Moshav.

Our  kindly  settlers   sought  to  speak  with  them, but their appeals were only met with shouts and threats.   The   police   were   called,   but   for   some reason  they  weren’t  taking  action.  The  situation was  getting  unbearable so  Shlomo  was  asked  to help, and he came rushing in from New York. He made  several   attempts   to  speak  as  a  friend   to these two outlaws but a reasonable conversation seemed  quite unlikely!

So Reb Shlomo gathered his beloved students in prayer and engaged in deep teachings, together creating  again  those  unique  golden  moments where  problems and  fears  get  washed  away  and are replaced  with peace,  laughter  and trust in the help from Above.

“Don’t  worry,  they  will  move  out  soon.”  Shlomo said.

Two days later, the two troublemakers moved out without   any   more   comments.  Two   days   after that,   the  Moshav   settlers   heard   that  they   had gotten  into a fight in Tel Aviv.   The man who had announced that Shlomo  should  be put in jail was himself sitting in jail, while his consort who had announced  that  Shlomo   should   be  locked   in  a mental  institution, was locked there himself.   The whole situation  had been suddenly, effortlessly, cleared  up.  Later  on,  Shlomo  went  to visit  them in their respective places of confinement, to see what he could do for them!

Being cherished, renewed, transformed.

Reb Shlomo’s concerts and prayer services in the synagogue often transformed people through a profound  healing  of  the  heart.  Many  would emerge  with a deeper  sense of their true identity, purpose,  and an awareness of being  cherished by the  heavenly,  all  powerful   presence   of  our Creator.

Together    we   shared    our   sadness    during    the trying times of wars in Israel as well as in the memories    of     our     nation’s     past     tragedies.

Together  we were  lifted  into jubilant  rejoicing  as we  sang,  clapped   and  danced  to  his  irresistible tunes of joy. We felt blessed  in renewed  trust. We could   see  the  light   shining   from   the  beautiful faces  of those  present.  Moments before,  we  had been in our usual ‘normal’  state.  Now we felt like new people,  loving and eager to share our joy and bless each other. Somehow we shifted  effortlessly to  the  way  we  had  always  been  meant  to  be.  It was  a  glimpse   of  what  Messianic  times  will  be like.

The  loving  kindness  flowing  from  the  depths  of Reb Shlomo’s  heart was like a mighty river – continuous, powerful, and healing. He was a descendant   from   an   illustrious   line   of   great rabbis.  His father  and five uncles  had been loved and  revered  rabbis  in major  towns  in  Germany. He was a descendant of an illustrious lineage of tsaddikim,  including  the   Taz   and   the   Bach   - tracing  back,  through  18 branches, all the way to King  David.   And  indeed  he honored  the Psalms of King David more than anyone, through his melodies  composed to the lyrics of the Psalms – sacred  words he had prayed  all his life. Reb Shlomo’s  melodies  allowed  these  words  to penetrate    the    hearts     of    his    audience     and suddenly  the  precious  light  these  ancient  words held was revealed  to us. We felt renewed.   Today, more than ever, many years after Reb Shlomo’s passing,      countless      thousands     continue      to

experience this sense of warmth and well-being when hearing  these melodies.

He profoundly inspired  his musician  friends  who were at times privileged to spontaneously accompany  him  in  his  concerts.   Some  of  them have  now  created  their  own  bands  and  are committed to continuing Reb Shlomo’s  work, inspiring  the  lives  and  hearts  of  countless  souls from all walks  of life, especially the young  people all around  the world.

Reb Shlomo’s last song

Once,  someone  asked  Shlomo:  “When  you  leave this  world  at the  end  of your  life,  where  do  you think you will go: to Heaven  or to Hell?

“I don’t  care  where  I will  be,”  he  answered, “as long as I have a telephone.”

In the year 1994 Shlomo knew his days were numbered.  Later  on,  a  dear  mutual  friend confided    to   us   that   on   Yom   Kippur   he   had secretly   told  her:    “I  feel  the  angel  of  death  is standing   near  me,  please   pray  for  me.”  A  few weeks  later he boarded  a plane  to visit his family in Toronto,  Canada.  The plane  was about  to take off.  Someone   sitting  behind  Reb  Shlomo   asked

him to sing a melody.  Shlomo  began  to sing. The moment   he  sang  the  words  “Chasdey   Hashem” (The loving  kindness  of the Almighty) he silently leaned forward in his seat. Seconds later, he was gone,   gently,   quietly,   peacefully.  He  just  “took off.”

In his last years,  Reb Shlomo  had been  flying  all over  the  world,   relentlessly  pushing   his  weary body weakened by a heart condition, beyond the limits of exhaustion.    He was passionately committed to reaching  out to as many souls as he possibly could, for he knew that with that loving connection he could continue helping us beyond time.  We  realize  that  now  his  soul  merges  with the awesome company of the great Masters and Tzaddikim.  Together   they  can  lift  us  up,  reach out  to us,  touch  our  hearts,  and  guide  us  in the right  direction. We  can  sense  that  since  Shlomo was so immersed in the Presence  of the Almighty while  living  in our  world,  he  can  now  reach  out and be present  for us more  than  ever,  even  from the unknown heights  he is now reaching.  Most of our companions feel him  closer  than  ever.  Often he  has  come  to  them  in  guidance  through dreams,    in   deeper    realizations   and   also,   for many, in miraculous interventions.

His message of absolute loving kindness shines through  every veil. He is here for those who knew him and also for an increasing number  of people who  have   never   met  him.  They   can  sense   his

unique,  heartwarming, comforting presence  with them  as  they  listen  to  his  voice  on  many audiotapes  and   CDs.   He  is  there   through   his songs,  his  deeply  moving  stories,  and  his empowering messages of soul wisdom  and depth of insight, conveyed  in utmost simplicity. Many Shlomo  Carlebach CDs and books are available  in English and Hebrew in Jewish bookstores. His melodies are now heard in countless synagogue services,  in yeshivot,  schools,  summer  camps,  at the Western  Wall in Jerusalem, in all types of concerts,  at gatherings, Shabbatons, retreats, weddings and celebrations.  Many  of these  tunes have become  classics.

Whenever the members  of a synagogue choose  to include  these  melodies  in their  services,  the prayers  become  vibrant  and  alive,  and  the attendance multiplies within a few weeks.   The melodies  infuse the services  with enthusiasm, young   people   come  flocking   in  and  the synagogue  becomes   a  joyful,   supportive  center for many more.

Does Reb Shlomo  have a telephone? He has more than  that.  He has been  given  a limitless  heart  to heart communication system that ever keeps expanding.

Many wonder, “Where does this power to affect people come from?”

Throughout  his  life,  Reb  Shlomo   loved   people and  delighted   in  them.  He  was  gentle,  gracious and kind, praying  for all, teaching  with boundless patience   and   perseverance,  holding   back nothing,  serving  all, every day, with joy.  It seems that because  of this Shlomo  was blessed,  and still is blessed, with abundant Divine assistance to continue   inspiring   us.  The  heavenly   sweetness and  healing  quality  of  his  melodies  enter countless    searching,   longing    hearts,    bringing peace and strength, gently leading us into real devotion  in prayer.

Over  the  28  years  of  our  invaluable connection with him, Joshua and I have been uplifted, supported, inspired and guided in most joyful, fulfilling, powerful ways.  We will ever thank the Almighty  one for this.

We  know  that  Reb  Shlomo  is  still  here  for  you and me, whether we were acquainted with him personally or  not.    He  is  a  conduit  of  blessings from on High, a call from our infinite, loving Creator.Our favorite  CD’s are:

Accessing Blissful Love

Perhaps there are many questions that may have come to your mind when you are going through  a crisis, or standing  at a crossroad,  or simply being in your average day to day humdrum state of awareness, such as:

“Why  am  I  here?  Why  all  the  confusion?   How can  I  communicate  with  God?  Why  the suffering?”

Sages and saintly  mentors  have always  reminded us  that  the  deepest,   most  refined,   most  sacred inner part of us, the part we call our soul, has its unique   divine   origin.   It  was  created   from   the Infinite  One, the Source of all Life, Light, Loving- kindness   and  Mystery   called  the  Creator.   They taught us that our soul is that essential part of ourselves which ever seeks the Presence of the Divine.  It  experiences blissful,  everlasting Love. It can connect us with glorious beauty, truth, oneness,  rapture,  exultation  and  creative  power. It seeks to infuse us with ever deepening  wisdom.

Our  soul  is  our  true  identity.   It  is  the  channel that encourages us to awaken and remember  who we  are  truly  connected  with.  Our  soul  patiently waits for us and calls us always from behind the scenes.

64

There  may have been moments in your life when you were able to attune your mind and heart with your  soul.  In those  blessed  flashes  of perception, you could begin to behold the great ocean of unknown power,  of Love and infinite  potentiality manifesting as  Life  and  Beauty.  This  power  has been called by many different names, such as the Infinite  One, The Almighty, the All-Merciful One and many others.

In  the  course  of  thousands  of  years,  holy  men and  women,   sages,  mystics   and  prophets,  have been blessed  to experience the Eternal  Creator  as a Being of eternal love, grace, power, kindness, truth… mystery…  It is our destiny and highest calling to perceive and feel this eternal Presence always  there for us, aware  of each of us, listening to us, guiding  us with  every  opportunity we give it to communicate with  us.  We  truly  can  choose to listen and to interact  in trust with this Being of absolute    intelligence   and   perfection.   We   can begin to sense this staggeringly awesome  Power sustaining  and  aware  of  every  soul,  every conscious being  and all the myriads  of extraordinary, powerful  beings  of Light  infusing the cosmic  dimensions of the worlds around  us.

Our sages and mystics wondered: “Why were we created?”  “What  is  our  purpose?”  They  probed again and again in the profound depths of their meditation,  seeking   to   understand  the   reason

and intent for the creation  of mankind  and of the

Universe. And their answer  came shining  forth:

“The Eternal, all powerful  Supreme  One desired to share blissful Love with us, with all created beings.”

In other  words  our  Creator  wanted  to have children  to love!   We can understand this, for we know  the  immense  joy  that  comes  with  holding our  newborn   infant  in  our  arms.  We  know  the delight of lovingly interacting with our children, watching  them grow as they are figuring  out how to handle their situations with ingenuity and passionate involvement.

We   are   created   in   God’s   image.   Our   Creator created  us  with  free  will  to  be  ultimately embraced  in  blissful   love,  as  well  as  returning this love in a magnificent flow of giving and receiving! Our  Creator  eagerly  supports  and sustains   each   of  us  through   our   many experiences  here  and  beyond,  until  we  learn  to give  and  receive  love  in ever  increasing joy!   We can choose to do this in our daily affairs with the people around  us.

We  can  let  go  of  self  criticism   as  well  as  the criticism   of  others.  We  can  forget  about  blame, guilt and regret  in our life situations and those of others.  We can choose to make our days beautiful with  our  attention  centered  on  gratefulness and

love for others  and especially for God. We can do this through  our unique  privilege  of free will.  We can  begin  anew  at  every  turn.  Step  by  step  we learn.

Our doorway to understanding and experiencing the   reason   of   our   existence    in   this   world   is through  loving,  caring  and  supporting others,  as well  as  ourselves.    Have   you  noticed   that  the moment  you begin  to really  appreciate and truly love  someone,  your  life  become   enhanced  with joy  and  aliveness?  Suddenly   you  realize  this  is the most wonderful thing that can happen  to you.

Giving and receiving blissful Love heals you. It connects  you with the heart of the Universe, with all Creation  and with our Creator.

For  many  of  us  human  beings,  giving  and receiving   blissful   love  is  not  at  all  easy.  From infancy,   most   of  us  are  deeply   traumatized  in some  ways with our experiences and incidents  of hurt and rejection, lack of personal  attention  and respect,  and  sometimes  much  worse.  This happens  because  we  live  in  this  world  of ignorance and pain. How can we learn to trust enough  and open our hearts?

One way to learn is through  simply  remembering that  there  is  a  loving  Presence   that  created  us, that    created    our   beautiful    planet    and    solar system.  This  Presence  gives  life  and  sustains  us at   every    moment,    so   that    we   may    express

ourselves   in  our  thoughts,   feeling   and  actions. You  can  choose  to  communicate  and  pour  out your  heart  to  this  compassionate  Being,  as  to  a best friend or mentor.

There  is  also  another  formula  that  can  lift  you into an altered state of awareness:

You  can  write   letters   to  God!In   direct   simple words. You can share all of your cares, yearnings, dreams,  and  all  the  personal  inner  secrets  that you even forgot about. Eventually, when the connection is  well  under  way,  you  can  listen  to the  answers   that   will  flow   spontaneously  into your  awareness. Conversing with  God  will  open your    awareness    by    leaps    and    bounds.    The answers   may  surprise   you.   They   come   with  a sense  of  peace  and  inner  confidence, a sense  of being  treasured,   listened   to  and  honored.   And much more~

You   may   want   to   convey   these   answers   into words   and   choose    to   communicate   them   to others. Or you may write them down on paper. In this  way,  you  know  these  healing  messages   are on record, like valuable jewels that cannot be misplaced  or forgotten.  You will find them  again and receive their benefit any time you read them. This method is powerful. It reveals some of your infinite resources.

I heard many personal  testimonies of people who have      benefitted       immensely       through      this

reassuring,  compassionate,  clear  and strengthening inner counseling. It answers one’s questions and gives innovative suggestions with practical steps for every situation at hand. These messages come with a Love that warms  and heals the   heart.   In   awed   gratitude    tears   are   often flowing    forth,    cleansing   and    restoring    one’s whole being.

More  than  we  know,  average  people  are  blessed to  experience  the   Presence   of  God   in  similar ways. And the great saintly people and masters of loving kindness have exemplified this most poignantly through  time.

Blissful  Love  is  our  essential  nature.    We  yearn for it. Our love for God and for others brings us health, well being, growth. It expands our understanding.    It dissolves jealousy, fears, resentments and hatred.  Blissful  Love enlightens our    vision    and    creative    intuition.    It   brings healing  comfort  with  heart  wisdom.  Choosing  to love fosters  harmonious relationships and lasting friendships  with  fulfillment,  peace,   loving   care and all good.  We feel blessed  ~

We are created with the faculty to connect with intuitive   wisdom   and  love.  We  can  realize  that indeed   every   life   stream,   every   force   field   of energy  in existence  was  created  through  the blissful   Love   of   our   infinite   Creator.   We   can know, it is the force of this blissful Love that maintains the existence  of the Universe. We can

invite  this  blissful  force  to  consciously reside  in our own heart.

Consistently choosing  to place  all your  attention on  loving  thoughts  can  change  your  life  in amazing  ways.  Give  it a try  for  a week.  You  will see astonishing results!

Hidden Blessings from Rabbi Meir, the Amshinover Rebbe

For    those    who    are    hungry    and    thirsty    for spiritual sustenance, a magnificent place of inspiration and  support  awaits  them.  This  place is truly God’s gift – The Holy city of Jerusalem.

Living in this city can be life transforming.

The qualities  which  are of greatest  importance to many  people  living  here  are  integrity,  simplicity and commitment to God’s service.    Absorbing wisdom  is  sought  after  with  intense  dedication. This is where the Holy One Blessed Be He is immensely appreciated and loved,  where  prayers rise up day and night for the awakening and the redemption    of    the    Jewish     people     and    of mankind.

If  you  are  fortunate   to  interact   and  join  with people  from  the  religious  community, especially on the Sabbath  and Holidays, it is likely  you will experience  this  vibrant   atmosphere,  alive   with pure, transcendent energies,  with enthusiasm, learning,    singing   and   sharing.       Many   saintly

teachers   and  unassuming  people   can  be  found here; people who are strong, humble, kindly, dedicated, living to learn, to teach, to absorb,  and to be. The joy of learning  wisdom  is much greater than   being   concerned  with   “looking   good,”   or which car one is driving.

Bayit Vegan,  perched  on one of the southern  hills of  Jerusalem,  high  enough   to  catch   the  ocean breeze,  is  a  unique  neighborhood  teeming   with holy   life.   When   I  walk   its  pleasant   tree-lined streets  in the afternoon, I find myself  surrounded by   droves   of   school   children   returning  home from   their   Torah   studies,   their   faces   innocent and    eager,     their    minds     filled     with    Torah teachings  and  stories  about  great  spiritual masters.  Some  of  the  older  children  hold  hands with their younger siblings to guide them home. Other children line up at some grocery stores, helping  with the family shopping.

If you  were  to forget  your  wallet  filled  with  cash on a street bench  in Bayit Vegan,  it would  almost surely be returned to you intact. People would go through great pains to locate you. Honesty and integrity  are a natural  part of everyday  life here.

On Shabbat—the Sabbath—and holidays, the sounds   of  prayer  and  singing   can  be  heard  on every   street   corner,   from   homes,   synagogues, and yeshivot  (religious schools).  The streets  that

are closed  to traffic are filled with people  walking peacefully, greeting each other in friendship and respect,  blessing  each  other  for  the  best.   Meals have  been  prepared  in  advance;  guests  are welcome  at every table.

After  my  husband   Joshua   completed  his residency in pediatrics at Albert  Einstein  College of Medicine in New York, we moved back to San Francisco. This  is when  we  first  met  Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.   Our encounter with this extraordinary master of loving kindness forever changed  our lives.

We became  deeply  drawn  toward  Jerusalem, and when Joshua was offered a position at Hadassah University Medical  Center to teach pediatrics and head up their children’s ward, we moved  to Israel with  our  three  young   children.   From   what  we had heard, Bayit Vegan seemed the best neighborhood. Without  our knowing  it, the hand of divine providence was masterfully guiding  us.

When we first moved to Bayit Vegan, Joshua searched  for a synagogue in which he could pray daily and found  one just a two-minute walk from our  home.  A  number  of  friends  mentioned that there was another  synagogue three minutes  away that  Joshua  would  probably  like  even  more.  But

he was happy  enough  with  the nearer  synagogue and put off going to visit the other.

One Shabbat afternoon Joshua was late for the minchah  (afternoon) service,  so  he  walked  over to the farther  synagogue.  Upon  arrival,  he found the building  empty.   “I must have missed  services here, too,” he thought.

Someone  entered  and reassured him that he was not  late;   within   a  few  minutes   the  synagogue filled up and services  began.  The atmosphere was intense, everybody deeply and enthusiastically involved  in their  prayers.  Much  to Joshua’s surprise,  the service  did not end quickly.  Usually he  found  himself  taking  longer  than  the congregation  to  finish   his  prayers,   but  in  this case,  the  timing  of  the  prayers  was  in  harmony with  his.  He  noticed  that  the  prayer  leader seemed  to be waiting  for a small,  elderly  man  in the front right corner of the room to finish. After services,  this elderly  gentleman came over to Joshua  and greeted  him warmly.

“Where  are you from?” he asked. “San Francisco.”

“Oh!  I bet I know  San  Francisco better  than  you do!”

Joshua   smiled   in  anticipation.  This  rabbi  in  a long black  coat certainly  didn’t  look like a typical Californian.

“I bet I’ve  been  to some  places  in San  Francisco that you’ve never been to,” continued the rabbi.

“What place would that be?” asked Joshua. “Have you ever been in jail?” he inquired.

Joshua  admitted  that  he had  never  been  sent  to jail in San Francisco—or anywhere. With a big smile,  the  elderly   gentleman  told  him  proudly, “Well I have!”

It was only later  that Joshua  found  out to whom he had been speaking:  the beloved and revered Rabbi Yerachmiel Yehudah Meir Kalish, the Amshinover Rebbe,  from the city of Amshinov in Poland,  founder  of this community synagogue as well  as  its  yeshiva.  He  was  the  descendant of  a long line of illustrious Chassidic rabbis  from Poland.

Joshua  was elated  to have finally  found  his place of prayer. He attended services every day and delighted  in watching  the kindly  Amshinover Rebbe   oversee   the  activities   of  the  synagogue.

The   Rebbe   spoke   clearly   and   rapidly   with   a gentle, melodious, high-pitched voice that reverberated  with  enthusiasm  and  joy.  He kibitzed  with  everybody, occasionally tugging  on the side curls  of the younger  students.    His clear eyes conveyed  the innocence of a child and at the same time the depths  of ancient  wisdom.  He was so  humble,  yet  he  was  treated  with  great reverence.

Joshua and his holy teacher became very close. Joshua  was considered a ben bayis,  a part of the family.  As  the  years  went  by,  Joshua  was privileged  to  be  invited   to  sit  in  on  countless private  counseling sessions  conducted by the Rebbe.   Joshua never tired of watching this holy man’s unique way of listening from the heart, encouraging and  strengthening those  who  came to  see  him  with  empathy   and  intense  love  and care. The Rebbe radiated joy, a gift from his connection with the Almighty  One.

It was with pure joy that the Rebbe  greeted  those who  needed  his  help  and  came  to him  for counseling. He loved them more than they could realize.      His   every   movement,  his   smile,   the twinkle   in   his   eyes,   his   sense   of   humor,   put people  at ease. Cookies  and a drink  of juice  were set  out  on  the  table.  But  the  instant  the  Rebbe made eye contact with his visitors something immediate   and    profound     happened.       Their

resistance, any emotional blockage  or burden, would  fall away,  immediately replaced  by a sense of  release  and  joyful  trust,  comfort,   and  a  new sense of confidence.

The Rebbe  made  his visitors  feel like they had all the time in the world to pour out their story. He listened  with  unconditional respect  and support. He  enjoyed   hearing   their   words,   finding   great delight in their insights, asking them the kinds of questions that  would  invite  them  to  draw  upon their  inner  resources to  an  even  greater  degree. The   Amshinover   Rebbe   was   like   a   gardener, gently planting seeds of wisdom in his visitors’ hearts.   Extremely  respectful  of  his  guests’   free will and initiative, his silent prayers gently, yet forcefully   encouraged   them   to   tap   into   their inner resources of strength and wisdom and to connect  with the Almighty.

In the  Rebbe’s  company, people  saw  themselves the way he saw them and strove to transform themselves.  This  is  the  way  Joshua  and  I experienced  the  Amshinover  Rebbe’s   love   and deep  respect  for us. And  today,  this is the model we use when  counseling others.    This  is the way that works  best with everyone.  We are fortunate to live in times when this approach  to counseling and  coaching   is  recognized  and  valued  in  most fields   of   psychology.      It   was   first   promoted already   in  the  sixties   by  the  renowned  author

Carl Rogers, who modeled and taught the “client centered”  approach   of  respect  and  positive regard, listening  with deep attention, acceptance and empathy—not giving advice but bringing the focus on the client’s own ability to evaluate their inner resources and make their own decisions.

The Rebbe slept only two hours a day, usually between   7:30  and  9:30  AM.  Between   midnight and  five  o’clock  in  the  morning  he  often counseled people. Many politicians and other prominent individuals who professed never to associate with any Rebbe visited Rav Yerachmiel secretly to ask for advice or a blessing on an undertaking.

One  day  Joshua  saw  the  Rebbe  quite  upset  with his gabbai, his attendant. This was the first time Joshua   had   ever   seen   the   Rebbe   displeased! “What   happened?   What   did   the   gabbai   do?” Joshua  inquired.  While  the  Rebbe  was  sleeping, the  gabbai  had  unplugged the  telephone so that the Rebbe, who wasn’t feeling well that morning, could catch at least a short nap undisturbed.

“Don’t you know that someone could really have needed  my  help  and  been  unable  to  reach  me? Don’t  you  know  it  could  have  been  a  matter  of life   and   death?”   the   Rebbe   pleaded   with   the

gabbai.  The  Rebbe  couldn’t  bear  the  thought  of not being available  to someone  in distress!

I witnessed a small incident  that said much to me about the Rebbe’s  great gentleness. One Yom Kippur  morning,  everyone  was  intensely  waiting for him to join the congregants in the yeshiva synagogue for the beginning of the services.   The room  was packed.   The Rebbe  was coming  out of his    study    room    and    was    heading    for    the sanctuary when his four-year-old granddaughter stood  before   him,  barring   the  way.  The  Rebbe asked  for  permission to pass,  but  she  shook  her head   and   wouldn’t   let  him   go.  He  waited   for quite  a  while,  smiling  and  gently  talking  to  her until  she  allowed  him  to  pass.     His  entire demeanor with all people  reflected  this same patient  consideration and  warm,  kindly  manner of speech.

One  day  Joshua  was  invited  to  a  special celebration  at  the  Rebbe’s  synagogue.  The  man who  was  being  honored  beamed  with  pride,  joy, and  gratitude.  At  first  Joshua   didn’t   recognize him,   but  when   he  looked   more   closely   at  the man’s  face,  he  realized  that  only  a  year  ago  he had seen this man hanging around the yeshivah’s kitchen  door.  A  despondent,  downtrodden  man in his fifties,  he looked  and moved  like a beggar.

As soon  as he saw him,  the Rebbe  asked:  “Could you do us a favor and help us in the yeshivah kitchen?”   The  Rebbe  knew  that  the  best  thing you  can  do  for  a  person  who  is  depressed  is  to keep him busy. A few days later, Joshua saw this former     beggar    again,    zealously     focused     on cleaning  the kitchen.

A few weeks  later,  the man was proudly  carrying a ring with the many keys of the yeshivah:  he had been  placed  in charge  of running  the dormitory, the synagogue, and the kitchen.   Within  the year, he asked  to retire  from  his duties  at the yeshiva, with apologies to the Rebbe,  as he was now venturing out into his own business.   Living  in an atmosphere filled with loving blessings  and acceptance  had  restored  his  sense  of  self confidence  and  initiative.      His  life  was transformed.

The Rebbe’s intuitive awareness and power of blessings  were, of course, unspoken. One day, Joshua  was  late  for  a medical  conference in Tel Aviv,  where  he was  to lecture.  In those  days  the road from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv was dangerous, narrow    and    steep,    with    many    sharp    turns. Joshua  was  driving  too  fast  and  lost  control  of the   car,    which    slid    straight    toward    a   tree.

Miraculously  the  car  stopped   inches   from   the tree trunk. “Thank  God!” he thought.

Later,    as    Joshua    was    driving    more    slowly through  Tel Aviv,  one  of his tires  blew  out.  “Oh, no!  I’ll never  make  it to my  lecture—and people are   waiting    for   me.”   Amazingly,   he   found   a service  station  just a few yards away!  In minutes, the  attendant had  changed  his  tire,  and  Joshua even  made  it  to  the  meeting   on  time.  After  his lecture,  he drove back uneventfully to Jerusalem.

Back  in Bayit  Vegan,  Joshua  stopped  by  to visit the  Rebbe,   as  he  did  every  day.  This  time  the Rebbe  greeted  him  at  the  door  of  the  yeshivah with  a  big  smile  and  the  words,  “Shalom Aleichem, peace upon you.” “Aleichem Shalom,” Joshua    replied.    The   Rebbe   saw   that   Joshua wasn’t   getting   the  hint.   “Do   you   know   why   I greeted  you with a Shalom  Aleichem?” he asked.

“I’m not sure. Why?”

“In  our  tradition, we  greet  people  like  this  only on two occasions: when we haven’t seen a good friend  for  more  than  three  days,  or  when someone   has  gone  through   a  time  of  danger.” Joshua   had   seen   him   only   yesterday.  Then   it dawned  on him:   “Ah!…Yes! I have gone through danger.  As  a matter  of fact,  life-threatening danger.  If my car hadn’t  stopped  just before  it hit

the tree…or  if my tire had burst on the steep, wet, winding   road  down   to  Tel  Aviv….”   The  Rebbe knew all along!

“Should     I    bentsh     Gomel?”     Joshua     asked, inquiring about reciting the prayer that one says upon escaping  mortal danger.

“If you feel you wish to,” was the Rebbe’s modest answer.

This  story  makes   us  wonder.   Who  knows   how often  we  can  be spared  great  hardships through the prayers and intercessions of those who feel closely bonded  with the Almighty.

Silent blessings  connected to the Highest Source flowing    graciously   and   easily—these   are   our latent gifts to receive and to give.   We are so privileged with great, immense  potential.  We are sitting  on a treasure  chest  and  we don’t  know  it. May we soon discover  it.

The best  gift that  the Amshinover Rebbe  gave  to me was the gentle spiritual growth and transformation  that  happened  to  Joshua   as  he was  basking  in  the  warmth  and  kindness  of  his loving  attention. I was the first to benefit  from it, for this growth  was my dearest  wish for him.

On our first visit together  we were received  with much welcoming smiles and attention. The first question the Rebbe asked me was “How are you adjusting  to your new environment?”

At that time I was wholly absorbed  in selflessly

being a wife and mother.  I didn’t know what to say.

Joshua  answered: “She is doing very well here.”

The Rebbe snapped  back at him:”I didn’t ask you. I asked her!”

I forgot all about this, but Joshua  never did and metioned it a few times over the years.

I also vividly remember the way the Rebbe looked at me and smiled when Joshua  presented one of my first paintings  to him. He gently suggested: “Perhaps  you might have it reproduced and sold in the gift shops?” Encouragement like this goes a long way. I felt inspired,  more paintings  evolved.  These developed into a children’s story, then into a book entitled  “A Gift of Love” with 36 full color illustrations. It was first published decades  ago and people still ask to buy more copies. It is soon to be republished.

His encouragement for my creative output continues to this day through  the loving attention of  his  daughter,  Rebbetzin  Chayah   Milikovsky. She  is  giving   me  her  keen   support,   especially with my writings  and paintings.

During Yom Kippur services in 1973 at the Amshinover yeshivah,  the praying  was so intense and   focused   that   no  one   seemed   to  hear   the sudden  loud  warning  sounds  of  the  siren announcing an unexpected attack on our land. Joshua  recalls,  “I  didn’t  hear  the  sirens.  At  the end    of    services    I   looked    around    and    was surprised  to  see  that  a  great  deal  of  the congregation was absent.  Then  I heard  the news. We were under  attack.  Those  who were on active duty  had received  a discreet  tap on the shoulder from one of their neighbors assigned  for this task of  recruiting each  other  and  had  retired  silently in order not to disturb the prayers. Within a few hours every available soldier had reached his assigned  place of military  duty.

In times of attacks and wars, the people of Israel become   immediately  united   as  one,   ready   for great   sacrifice   in  order   to  protect   others   from danger.

This  commitment  in  oneness  brings  down powerful   divine  intervention  in  many  unknown and   unpredictable   ways.      Ardent   prayers   for peace   and   strength    ascend    from   most   every heart,    calling     for    safety    and    blessings     on everyone  facing  any  harm.     This  power  of blessings  has  incalculably spared  countless  lives

during  the  six  wars  since  Israel’s  independence in 1948.  Hatred  and weapons  have no real power when confronted with the holiness of true connection with the supreme  Source  of Life.

What   was   most   miraculous   about   Rav Yerachmiel   was   his   radiance.    A   radiance    of smiles  and kindness, good cheer  and enthusiasm that was irresistible—a dynamic  spirit impossible to contain. Considering what this frail looking gentleman had experienced during  World War II, this was truly wondrous.

You may be wondering how the Rebbe  ended  up in jail in San Francisco. This incident  was part of a dramatic story of escape from Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II, under the inspired guidance  of his illustrious father, Rabbi Shimon Shalom Kalish, known as Rav Shimon Shalom. A handful of books have been written about this miraculous rescue of more than sixteen hundred Jews.  The  material  quoted  below  is from  one  of these  books,  The  Fugu  Plan,  by Marvin  Tokayer and  Mary  Swartz.     Rav  Yerachmiel’s  daughter, our  dear   friend   Rebbetzin  Chayah   Milikovsky, who  was  fifteen  years  old  at that  time,  was  also kind enough  to share some details of these events with us.

 Rescue with Reb Shimon  Shalom  in Japan

In Poland,  at the end of 1939, there seemed  to be no   avenue   of   escape   from   the   invading   Nazi hordes.  All of the surrounding countries  had shut their   borders   tightly,   except   for  Russia.      And Russia offered little safety for Polish Jews.   An atmosphere of helplessness, denial, and doom prevailed, not only for the Jews, and not only in Poland,  but throughout Europe.

Yet,  out  of  the  blue,  someone  appeared   that  no one could have dreamed of or hoped for: Chiune Sugihara,  the  Japanese   Consul-General  in Kovno, Lithuania. He understood the desperate situation   of  the  Jews  and  was  in  a  position   to save many hundreds of them. Against his own government’s  orders,   and   at  great   risk   to  his career  and the safety  of his family,  Sugihara granted   hundreds  of  visas  to  Polish   Jews  who had  fled  to Lithuania. Even  when  he was  forced to leave  Kovno  at the end  of 1940,  he continued to sign visas at a fast pace and was even handing them  out  the  window  of  the  departing train  he was on. The visas permitted the refugees  to travel through Russia and on to Kobe, Japan. Although their final destination was to be Curaçao, after spending  several  months  in Kobe,  they  would  be sent to Shanghai, China.

Among those who received visas were the Amshinover  family,  Rabbi  Shimon   Shalom   and his wife Yita Tauba,  his son Rav Yerachmiel Meir and his wife Faiga Bracha with their children, Menachem and Chayah.  These  6 people  were the only survivors  of a family  numbering much  more than  a  hundred   members.  Most  fortunate   were those who escaped  in spite of the organized mass murder  of 6 million  European Jews.

In Poland, just a few hundred managed  to get through,  most  of  them  thanks  to  the  generosity and self sacrifice of Sugihara.  Among them the students  of the Mir Yeshiva  also found  their  way out.

They  readily  traveled  by  train  from  Kovno, through  the  endless  plains  of  Siberia  and Mangolia, to Vladivostok. From there they took a boat  to  Kobe,  Japan.     The  entire  journey   took about   two   weeks.   In   Kobe   the   refugees   were warmly  received  by  the  Jewish  community of  a few  dozen   families   (Middle   Eastern   and European   businesspeople   who   had   settled   in Kobe    before    World    War    I),   who,    with    the financial  help  of international Jewish organizations, quickly rented as many homes as were available.

Coming   into  contact   with  the  Japanese   way  of life was an immense delight. The Japanese were charming,  and  polite;  Kobe  was  a  lovely,  clean city. What a contrast from Poland, with its deep- seated,    centuries-old   hatred    of   the   Jews,   its brutal,  murderous  pogroms   that  erupted  at  the least pretext,  its pervading dirt and poverty.

All this felt like paradise.  But soon a government summons was sent to the Jewish community of Kobe  requesting  two  of  their  leaders  to  appear for a “military  interrogation” in Tokyo.  This  was a  serious  matter.  Everyone  knew  that  the Germans   and  Japanese   had  become   allies,  and that Nazi hatred and lust for power was already infecting  the Japanese  military  leadership.

Those   in  charge   of  the   Jewish   community  of Kobe realized that this “interrogation” required more  than  diplomatic skills  or business  acumen. A miracle  was needed.  The community asked Rav Shimon  Shalom  to represent them,  as well as the elderly Rabbi Moshe Shatzkes. They were accompanied by  Leo  Chanim,  a Jewish  resident of Kobe, who served as their translator.  Rabbi Shlomo  Shapiro,  young  linguist,  accompanied them as well.

The following  is quoted  from the book “The Fugu

Plan” by Marvin  Tokayer  and Mary Swartz:

The  four  men  traveled   overnight  by  train  from Kobe   to   Tokyo,   a   thirteen-hour  journey.   The train’s   Japanese   passengers  seemed   much amused by the long, black formal satin coats and broad-brimmed hats of the two bearded old men…But  they  could  not  have  been  more gracious  in their actual dealings  with the “strange foreigners”: extra room was made for the Jews; tangerines,  balls   of  rice   wrapped   in  seaweed, even   sake   was   offered   to   them.      The   rabbis smiled and politely  refused.

Then a group  of Nazi soldiers  passed  through  the car   screaming,   “Parasites!   Pigs!”   in   German. They kicked at the rabbis’ legs, grabbed at their beards  and spat  into their  faces.   “You  think  you are safe  here?   Hah!   You  are safe  nowhere. We will annihilate you. We will eradicate  your whole, stinking,   sub-human  race  from  the  face  of  the earth! You are doomed, Jews. Soon you will be dead…”    The  soldiers  moved  on,  bored  with  the lack of response.

The   rabbis   tried   to   clean   themselves  up   and sipped some hot tea from thermoses they had brought   with   them.   Leo   Chanim   was   in  utter shock.  Feeling  ill,  he  went  to  the  bathroom and threw up.

When  they  arrived  in  Tokyo,  they  were  met  by two  officials   and  were  immediately  taken   to  a

windowless interrogation room in a nondescript government building.    On  one  side  of  the  table sat  the  three  rabbis  and  Leo  Chanim.     On  the other side were four admirals in dress uniforms. Heads   shaven,   arms   folded   stiffly   across   their chests, they sat motionless.    The opening pleasantries were so brief they were just short of insulting.  Then suddenly the opening shot was conveyed  through  their translator.

“What  is the inherent  evil of your people  that our friends  the Germans  hate you so much?”

Rabbi  Shatzkes   was  the  more  eminent   scholar, and  the  Rebbe  deferred  to  him.  But  Rabbi Shatzkes  had  no  answer.  What  could  one  say  to such a question? How does one confront such arrogance, such a void of knowledge. Where  does one begin?

“The Nazis hate the Jews because the Nazis know that we Jews are Asians.”

It was  the  Amshenover Rebbe  who  had  spoken. Scarcely   three  seconds  had  passed  between   the posing  of the question  and this calm  response. It surprised   the   admiral    because    of   its   totally unforeseen   nature.    The   admiral    involuntarily shifted  his eyes to look directly  at the Rebbe. “What  does  this  mean—you are  Asians.  We  are Asians!”

“Yes,” the Rebbe agreed. “And you are also on the list.”

“What list?’

The  Amshinover  Rebbe  smiled  a  smile  so supremely    calm,   so   warm,   so   totally   out   of keeping  with  the  threatening atmosphere which the officers had tried to create that, in spite of themselves,  all   four   of   them   leaned   forward, waiting for him to speak further.

“My dear friends,  I have just come  from Europe. I  have  lived  with  the  great  hate  that  the  Nazis have for others.   I think that perhaps  no one who has not lived in the midst of it can understand it. But  to  get  even  an  inkling  of  the  scope  of  their hate, don’t read their writings in the censored translations  they   give   you.     Read   what   Nazis write  in  the  original   German.     There,  you  will learn that you also are on their list of ‘inferior people.’   So are the gypsies,  the blacks,  the Slavs. and the Japanese.  . .”

“Let me tell you a story,” the Rebbe continued, sitting  back slightly  in the hard chair.  “In Berlin, not  many   years   ago,  perhaps   three   or  four,  a young  German  girl fell in love  with  a fine young man, a Japanese man who was working at the Japanese   embassy.   Naturally   enough,   the  two

91

young  people  wanted  to marry,  but such  a thing could not be in Germany. Such a marriage  was forbidden  by  law,  by  the  laws  of  ‘racial  purity,’ which  prohibit  a fine German  girl from marrying a. . . Japanese.”

All four admirals  were  now staring  at the Rebbe, not  even  trying   to  conceal   their  interest.   They had heard such stories about America which had changed   its  immigration  laws  to  keep   out  the “Japs” or about the British, who called Asians “Yellow Monkeys.” And now, what was this man saying?   That Japan’s  most successful ally—those who would rule the world with her—that  the Germans  too thought  in such terms?

“You are lying,” the first admiral  said.

“No,”  the  Rebbe  said,  calmly.  “Consider for yourself:   What   is  the  image   of  Hitler’s   master race? How does he describe it? In films, documentaries,  newspapers,  who  is  shown bringing  victory  home to the German  fatherland? Always,    always,    the    so-called    Aryans.    Tall, broad-shouldered, blond hair, blue eyes. . . The reason  they  hate  me,  the  reason  they  hate  all of us, is because we don’t fit the image of the Aryan master race.”

The admirals  sat staring  straight  ahead for a long time after the Amshinover Rebbe had finished.

Eventually, one of the lesser  admirals  spoke directly   to  the  [Japanese  translator  Fujisawa]: “Tell our Jewish guests there will now be a brief recess. Tell them we have been inexcusably inconsiderate in  not  allowing  them  time  to  rest from their long trip and in not offering proper refreshments.  Tell   them   we   will   meet   in  two hours   time   in  a  more   comfortable  place.”   He paused,   then   added,   “and   be  polite,   Fujisawa- san.”

The  four  officers  stood  as  the  Jews  were  shown out of the interrogation room and led to a suite of clean,  Western-style  rooms  overlooking  the garden  behind  the building.

When,  several  hours  later,  the Jews  were  shown into a large conference room lined with windows, the atmosphere was  entirely  different.  Again  the four  admirals  were  lined  up proudly  on one side of  a  table.    But  now,  seated  beside  them,  were two newcomers, resplendent in long white robes and  tall  stiff  black   hats  tied  decorously  under their  chins.  They  were  high-ranking  Shinto priests.    The  heavy  table  had  been  set  out  with bowls of apples and bananas and tangerines and plates  of  seaweed-wrapped  rice  balls.  Gone  was the  heavy   hand   of  the  military.   The   admirals were merely for show. Throughout the next four hours,  they  said  not  a  word.  From  the  opening

greeting    through    the   final   farewells,   the   two priests were entirely  in control.

The discussion centered almost exclusively on religion:  comparisons and  contrasts  between Shinto   and  Judaism,   extended   explanations  of the  theory  of common  origin  (that  the  Japanese were descended, in part, from one of the ‘ten lost tribes’  which  had  come  to  Japan).      Rabbi Shatzkes   described  the   basic   principles,  ideas and ceremonies of the Jews.   The younger  of the two priests responded with explanations of the customs  and beliefs of Shinto.

It was late afternoon before  the meeting  drew  to a close. As a final note, the Amshenover Rebbe repeated  the gratitude  of the refugees  to the Japanese  for taking them in and treating  them so well.

An admiral  spoke  briefly  to the priests,  and then the  first  admiral,   in  turn,  reassured  the  rabbis. “Go  back  to  your  people.   Tell  them  they  have nothing  to fear:  we Japanese  will  do our  utmost to provide for your safety and peace; you have nothing  to fear while in Japanese  territory.”

The    Fugu    Plan:    The    Untold    Story    of    the Japanese and the Jews During  World  War II, by Marvin Tokayer and Mary Swartz, New York: Paddington Press, Ltd. 1979, pp. 168-181.

A  few  hours  before,  the  Jewish  community had stood  on  the  brink  of catastrophe. Now  a gentle old  man   had  dissolved   the  danger   with  a  few inspired words. When a person lives in a state of blessing,   connected  with  God,  the  right  words and  the  right  decisions  naturally  flow spontaneously.

The   refugees    spent   five   months   in   Japan   in blessed peace and security. During that time, Professor  Setsuzo   Kotsuji,   a  Christian   minister who was well-versed in classical  Hebrew  and who had  acted  as  an  unofficial  liaison   between   the Jewish refugees in Japan and the Japanese government, came  to visit Rav Shimon  Shalom  a few   times,   eager   to   learn   all   he   could   about Judaism.  A deep  friendship grew  between  them, so deep, in fact, that Professor Kotsuji later converted to Judaism.

When he passed away in 1973 he was buried in Jerusalem’s  Har   Menuchot  cemetery.     A   few years  ago,  his  two  daughters came  to Jerusalem to visit Rebbetzin Chayah.   It was a most pleasant visit.   They  were  accompanied by a translator, a woman  who had also converted to Judaism.

The  golden   period   of  rest  in  Japan   didn’t   last more  than  5  months.   For  then,  heavy  pressure

from  Nazi  Germany  forced  the Japanese  to send the  sixteen-hundred  Jewish   refugees   now scattered across Japan to Japanese-occupied Shanghai.  Rav  Shimon   Shalom   and  his  family were invited  by Japanese  military  officials  to remain in Japan and avoid the difficult living conditions in war torn Shanghai. Rav Shimon Shalom,  however,  would  not abandon  his people in their distress.

He and his family remained in Shanghai  until the end  of  World  War  II.   During  those  dark  years, the Kalish family heard about the vicious torture, murder,  and deportation of millions  of European Jews.    In  Poland,   hardly  anyone   survived.   The Kalish family escaped only through miraculous divine interventions.  But in Shanghai, another tragedy occurred to them: One night, Nazi thugs cornered  Menachem, Reb Yerachmiel’s only  son, as he was walking alone down the street.   They mercilessly  beat  up  this  young   seventeen-year- old  so  brutally  that  he  never  completely recovered.

In 1945,  the family  boarded  a ship for San Francisco, on their  way to New York.   They  were told at the American Embassy  that all of their passports were  in order.    But  when  they  arrived in  San  Francisco’s  immigration  check   point,   it was  discovered  that  Menachem  was  a  few  days past 18, the age at which  he was required  to have

his own passport.    So Menachem, with his father and  mother   were  sent  to  jail  in  San  Francisco until the paperwork could  be sorted  out.   Chayah traveled on with her grandparents to New York. Perhaps  this  was  the  final  blow  for  Menachem, who  had  hoped  to  finally  find  a place  of  justice and  peace.    For  the  rest  of  his  life,  he  chose  to quietly study by himself in his room.   He never married  or took up any challenge.

One week later, representatives of the Jewish community in San Francisco finally  succeeded in bailing  them out.  The family  settled  in New York for  a  few  years.  In  1954,  Reb  Shimon  Shalom’s soul  departed   for  a  higher  world.    It  was  then clear   that   his   legacy   of   leadership  should   be taken  over  by  his  son  Reb  Yerachmiel, who  had the qualities necessary to move the family to the Holy Land, Israel, recreate  a new community and open a yeshiva there.    Chassidic masters are ambassadors between  earth and heaven,  between us  and  the  refined,  pure  realms  of  intense holiness from higher worlds.   Their deep soul connection with the Supreme  One is capable of lifting up entire communities to a higher level.

So the family moved from New York City to Jerusalem, the  beloved  Holy  City  hoped  for against  all hope for so long!   They settled  in Bayit Vegan,     where     they     built     the     Amshinover

synagogue and yeshivah,  on Harav  Frank  Street. It has been thriving  ever since.

Rav Shimon Shalom had only one son, Rev Yerachmiel, who had two children:  a daughter, Rebbetzin Chayah, and a son, Menachem, who never  married.  Rebbetzin Chayah  had  three children     who    are    now    blessed    with    many children  and  grandchildren,  now  numbering more than one hundred.   The kindness, holiness, wisdom,  humility,  peace,  harmony, and inner joy that Rav Shimon Shalom and his descendents exemplify  influences  the   lives   of   many thousands.  And   these   thousands  reach   out   to many  more  thousands.  For the true love of God and  of  His  Creation   forever   strengthens, comforts,    heals,    and    frees    those    who    are receptive  and yearning  for higher  values  and meaning  in their lives.

Chassidic Rebbes, through their continuous, absolute,    intense    devotion    to   God   and   their fellow   men,   are   channels   of  a  steady   flow   of blessings   from  on  High  that  can  permeate  the lives of the people around them, endowing them with  the strength  to thrive  and  make  the best  of even  the  most  difficult  circumstances.    The Rebbes’     inner    connection    with    the    Higher Realms  radiates  from  them  as a powerful  energy

of inner bliss, peace, and well being.   This is what we experienced with Reb Yerachmiel.  He rarely gave discourses. The engaging  way he moved, swiftly  and  lightly,  the  intense  focus  with  which he prayed, or smiled, or looked at people spoke volumes.  The tone  of his gentle  voice  penetrated the heart. Harmonious transformations of people and   situations  just   seemed   to  happen   around him.

Reb  Yerachmiel  was  a  practical,   down  to  earth man,  quick   to  action.     Joshua   once  brought   a friend  of his  from  New  York,  Professor Rose,  to visit  the Rebbe.   Professor Rose  was prepared  to have  a  deep  theological  conversation  with  him. The  Rebbe  sat  them  down  with  drinks  and cookies.

“How are you?” he asked Professor Rose. “Fine, thank you.”

The Rebbe leaned forward over the table to look penetratingly  into  his  eyes.  “How  are  you, really?”  he inquired  softly.

At   this   point   Joshua’s   friend   suddenly    broke down and spilled out his story. He hadn’t even mentioned  it  to  Joshua.   Having   been   given   a grant  from  an  organization in the  United  States to  teach  at  Hebrew  University in  Jerusalem, he

had  just  moved  to Israel  with  his wife  and children.  But when he arrived,  he discovered that the position was unavailable; it had simply disappeared.

Immediately, the Rebbe picked  up the phone  and called some acquaintances at the University. Amazingly, within  minutes  the  problem  was solved,  and  the  position  reappeared.   From  that day  forward,   Professor  Rose   happily   began   to teach at the Hebrew  University.

In  1975,  eight  young  couples,   including  Joshua and me, all of us students of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, were inspired to found a spiritual community   in    Moshav    Me’or    Modi’im.     We needed  the government agency  of Poalei  Aguda’s approval to do so.   It was only through the intervention of the Amshinover Rebbe that we received  the go-ahead. The settlement is situated near the site where  the ancient  Maccabees began their   revolt   against   the  Greeks   to  reclaim   the Holy  Temple.  Even  though  twelve  previous attempts  to settle a moshav  at this site had failed, Me’or   Modi’im   continues  to  thrive.     The  early years were rough, the living conditions very primitive  with  no source  of income  available.   It was mostly due to the frequent visits, blessed uplifting  support  and help form  Rabbi  Carlebach

that the founding settlers kept their spirit strong. Between   his  blessings   and  those  of  the Amshinover Rebbe,  the moshav  survived.

In  1976,  with  little  warning,   the  Rebbe  took  ill and,   a  few   weeks   later,   quietly   passed   away. Joshua had been attending to him at Hadassah Hospital.   He still hasn’t  quite recoverd  from this loss.  The first words Rebbetzin Chayah  said after her father’s  departure were:  “In all my life I have never seen my holy father do or say anything  that wasn’t perfectly  good.”

On that day, I knew Rav Yerachmiel’s soul was departing from this world when I witnessed three sparrows   fly  into  our  apartment in  Bayit  Vegan and  perch  on  a  chanukiyyah,  a  Chanukah menorah.      Chanukah  is   a   celebration  of   the victory of the Maccabees and the restoration of Light   in  the  Holy   Temple.      The  sparrows   sat there  for  several  minutes   and  then  flew  off.  As the Rebbe’s  soul was ascending to higher  worlds, these  messengers on  wings  were  bringing  to  us the blessings  of our beloved  Rebbe  and signaling that our venture  to settle  Moshav  Me’or  Modi’im had  his  support   and  approval.  A  few  minutes later, Joshua  called to confirm  the sad news.

After the Rebbe left this world, the community insisted  that  his  grandson, Rav  Ya’akov Milikovsky,   assume    leadership   of    the community.  It  took  an  entire  year  to  convince Rav Ya’akov  to accept the awesome  responsibility and become  the present  Amshinover Rebbe.

Looking  back to when the Rebbe  had first moved to Israel in 1954, the small insignificant neighborhood of Bayit  Vegan  had been  zoned  by city  planners   as  an  industrial  area.   When   the Rebbe  moved  in,  the  neighborhood  rapidly changed   into   a   vibrantly    alive   religious community   composed   of   Israelis,    North    and South   Americans,   Europeans,   South   Africans, and    more,    all    of    whom    lived    together     in harmony. Bayit Vegan teems with yeshivot, synagogues, and other  study  centers.   Since 1968 its  population  has  grown  at  an  ever  increasing rate.         New   apartment   buildings    have mushroomed over all the surrounding area.  The entire neighborhood is teeming with a peaceful vibrantly  alive atmosphere.

Even though Reb Yerachmiel, the Amshinover Rebbe’s   soul  departed   to  a  higher   world   more than  30  years  ago,  we  remember him  as  vividly as  if  our  encounters happened yesterday.   With just  one  glance,   one  smile,  a  few  gentle  words from  him,  whole  new  transformations would emerge   in   our   deeper   awareness.     He   was   a

powerful  ally to our growth,  our inner  search  for true  reality   and  harmonious  living.     He  was  a gentle friend, a most caring, loving father, holy Rebbe,  mentor,  counselor and  coach.    Who  can hold  on  for  long  periods   of  time  in  a  state  of immense    reverence   and    blissful    inner communion  with   the   infinite   Creator,   with   a Peace  encompassing eternities?   Fortunately for us,  there  are  some  exceptional  soul  giants  who can.    The  power  gathered   from  that  sustained, awed focus is radiating forth from them as an indescribable energy that is palpable, bringing a sense  of  blessed   harmony   and  calm,  steadying and  strengthening those  who  happen  to  be around,  leaving  an  unforgettable  feeling  of warmth,   kindness   and   well   being.      A  highly, refined,  pure energy that heals on every level.

Connecting with Our Infinite Source

Throughout the millennia, countless  people  have experienced  the  extraordinary  power  of connecting with our Infinite Source, the creative Force  that  brought  forth  the  Universe, our Creator.   This   usually   happens   through   loving trust,   heartfelt    yearning    and   focused    prayer. Many  have been  blessed  with awesome  miracles. The   hopelessly  sick   or  the  terminally  ill  have been  cured  to  the  amazement  of  their  doctors. Other  people  in  mortal  danger  were  rescued  in the most  dramatic  and  unexpected ways.  Others who  were  breaking   down  in  despair   have  been saved   by   a  sudden   flow   of   profound    healing peace from an unknown Source. The list of testimonies  is  awesome   and  we  hardly  know  a tiny  fraction   of  the  millions   of  miracles   people are experiencing all over the world. At times miracles occur on a grand scale, sparing entire nations  from  wars  and  nuclear  disasters  such  as in our times. We do not realize how much divine intervention is standing  on our behalf,  in spite of all mankind’s stubborn  misdirected ways.

You may wonder:  “What is this mysterious power that some  of us have been  privileged to tap into?

What  is this  power  that  transformed their  lives, as well as the lives of their loved ones?”

You  may  be comforted to know  that  the answer

to these questions is very simple.

Basically, all effective communication and connection rests  on  the  quality  of our  love.   We are  blessed  with  an  invaluable privilege,  for  our love  is  directly   connecting  us  with  the  infinite one,   Source   of  all  Life   and   all  existence!  The essential   quality  of  this  creative  Source  is  Love itself.

When   we  truly   wholeheartedly  love,   we experience a spark  of that  divine  essence.  When we love  divine  truth,  divine  joy,  divine  kindness and mercy  we connect  ourselves  to the source  of all  Power,  all  Bliss,  all  Joy.  Then  we  are  able  to help   our   loved   ones   through    that   love.   We become  one  through  the  powerful  link  of Universal Love  –  one  with  God’s  Love  and  one with those loved ones we are praying  for.

When  we are committed to divine  eternal  Truth, to the beauty  and harmony  of soul Wisdom,  then our love will bring to our loved ones new lights of understanding.  It  will  inspire   into  them  a  new desire to experience that deep wisdom and knowledge, to taste of its many life-giving fruits.

Our  love  for  creation   alone  is  in  itself  a  great power  because,  consciously or not,  we ourselves are a spark of the Divine.  However, when we pray for our loved ones and our love is consciously connected with the Almighty  Creative  Source,  the beloved    Eternal    One,   it   becomes    immensely more powerful. We link with primal energies of creative  Life, coming  to assist us.

We  are  never  alone.  We  are  being  watched  over and accompanied, and we are being especially assisted when we are in a joyful, positive state of mind.

As our love grows  in sincere  commitment, we are drawing to ourselves the attention of caring, compassionate  transcendent  beings,  who promptly  come to our aid. They respectfully take hold     of    our    loving     prayerful     desires     and yearnings   and   lift   them   up   to   the   Supreme Source of Life.   Our prayers are being received, supported, strengthened and manifested.  They turn  into  blessings  for  ourselves  and  our  world. These angelic forces patiently wait for us to be receptive. They know our needs  and the best way to meet those needs. As messengers of divine compassion, they transmit those energies of Blessings, Love  and  Protection from  Above  into the form most beneficial to us, such as a sense of well-being,    new     inspiration,    guidance,    joy,

miraculously renewed health, harmonious relationships and beneficial new situations.

Sometimes our protection happens through unexpected  events   just   at  the   right   time   and place, or a change of circumstances – “out of the blue”.  Or  people’s  negative  attitudes  towards  us will  transform,  or  they  will  forget  all  about  it. Divine   Protection   through    prayer   is   mightier than any political or military power. It can bring historical changes  in the destiny  of nations.   All it takes is one idea visiting  the mind of whoever  has grabbed  enormous power over millions.

One  idea  in  the  mind  of  Hitler  brought   on  the total  collapse   of  his  military   might.   The  idea? “Let’s invade and conquer Russia.”   After 1943, hundreds  of  thousands  of  his  soldiers   froze  to death  in its  endless  snowy  plains  and  the  world was saved from the terror of a madman. (see chapter:  ”Turning  the Tide of World War II)

In 1991 Saddam Hussein sought to terrorize the people  of Israel with threats  of nuclear  attacks,  as well as 50 scud missiles with biological warfare. Then  he had one idea:   Requesting funding  from the  leaders   of  Kuwait   for  his  military   projects. Kuwait  refused.   Sadaam   was  incensed.  He  sent his troops  to invade  Kuwait.  This led to a domino effect  of  circumstances  that  brought   his  entire

demise  within  a few days.   (See Chapter:  50 Scud

Missiles  One Casualty.)

These   are   two   separate    incidents    where   one single   idea  turned   the  tide  of  wars  that  could have brought devastation for countless  millions: World War II as well as the Gulf War:

This   is   what   happens    through    the   power   of prayer.

Many, many times people have related their own miracle   stories.   Countless  testimonies  are attesting  to that.

But   even   more   often   people   have   kept   their stories  concealed in  their  heart.  Why?  It  seems that for some, the implications of these unexplainable events, is too overwhelming. They would  rather  set  them  aside,  even  though  they cannot  forget  them.  Perhaps  the Great  Unknown is too threatening to some of our habitual belief systems.  It may be quite scary to admit that there is much more to life than this physical  reality and that a mysterious, all knowing Powerful  Being is aware and relating directly to every detail of our situations. This means  that all our thoughts, actions, capabilities, and all of the possible resources available  to us are also known by this awesome   Power.  We  may  feel  this  is  too  mind-

boggling  to even conceive  of it. And the basic fear is:

“How  am  I  supposed to  deal  with  this?  I  don’t

know how to begin, and I certainly don’t want to delude   myself.”   If  I  talk   about   it,  people   will consider  me a mental case!”

We are barely moving out of the dark ages of materialism. Fortunately, in our times we have enough   information  available   to  overcome  our fears  and  really  receive  higher  knowledge about our  soul  and  the  great  mystery  of  Creation  and Life. Our scientific knowledge is beginning to expand,  to  reach  out  to  new  frontiers,  the frontiers  of the  Spirit.  We  are  beginning to consider    new   perspectives  into   the   nature   of those extraordinary energies  that bring forth Life and  all  created  substances.    Publications of various   scientific   studies   on  Quantum  Physics are   appearing,  speaking    of   the   connection  of mind and body, the power of our thoughts and feelings   over  our  physical   reality,   the  essential unity of the laws that brought the universe into existence,  and  more  about  the  inscrutable mysteries of our life and creation.  The more we know, the more we realize there is an ocean of enthralling discoveries yet to unravel.

Thank God in the past few years, with more intelligent   information   at    our    disposal,    our minds   are   expanding;  our   belief   systems   are

opening   to  new   vistas.   We   are  no  longer   too frozen   into  our  own  limited   set  opinions.   This allows  for a gentle  awakening of our deeper intuitive   faculties,   for  a  willingness  to  listen  to the  higher  wisdom  of the  heart  that  comes  with our  faculty  of  caring  and  loving.  With  our acceptance   of   healing   wisdom    and   truth,   we begin to trust in our faculty to make our lives beautiful  through  our  positive  choices.  Soon  we find   ourselves    engaged    in   loving   communion with  our  Source  of joy,  strength  and  peace,  with the Higher Power that sustains us and the entire Universe.

from the book:

Blessing with Love

On deep inner levels, we human beings are all connected together through the subtle and mysterious invisible bonds of our thoughts  and feelings.    The  most  powerful   bonds  between  us are those of love, the love that heals and restores.

We are all meant to live in harmony and loving support   with   each   other.      It   heals   us.      One beautiful way to bring about this reality is to recognize and use the divine  power  that has been granted   us,  namely   the  power   to  bless   others with love.

Many of us have great difficulty believing in and tuning  in  with  the  love  and  energy  of  blessings that the Infinite One is constantly pouring down over  us.  We  are  imprisoned in  the  ignorance of our physical  human  condition.   We walk  around in a world  of illusions  that seems  very real to us. We ignore  all the miracles  that surround  us.   Yet we are basically profoundly yearning to give and receive  real  Love,  a Love  that  heals  us and  gives us safety, peace and joy.

You may be wondering:” what does blessing  with love really mean?”

Blessing  with  Love  is attuning  with  the creative will and vision  of our compassionate Creator.  It is holding  that loving  creative  will and vision  in our heart and mind, and channeling it into our world  so that it may  manifest  in some  way  into the lives of others.

The secret of the creative power of blessings is revealed  in the first words  of Genesis.  God’s  very first utterances at the beginning of Creation  were words   of  blessings.  God   said:   “There   shall   be Light.”  Gen.  1:3 ~ And light  came  into existence.

~ “God saw that the Light  was good.”  Gen. 1:4. ~

With    each    following     phase    of    the    creative process,   it  is  repeated:   “God   saw   that   it  was good.”   ~  And  when   He  completed  everything: “God  saw  all  what  He  had  made,  and  behold,  it was very good.” Gen. 1:31. ~

We  are  created   “in  the  image   of  our  Creator.” Gen.   1:26.   Blessing   with   Love   is  being   a  co- creator  with  the  creative   will  and  vision  of  the Master  of  Creation.   And  He  desires  our cooperation  and  willingness  to  work  with  Him. His will and vision  becomes  revealed  to us more and more clearly,  as we are blessing  Him in Love.

Because   of  our   privileged  position   of  being   a human being in this world, we can gather the opportunities  to  work  in  partnership  with  God.

In this way we heal ourselves of our painful conditions of anxieties, of fears and depression. Instead  we are building  for ourselves  and others a sense of joy, healing and harmony. We make a gesture    of   trust   toward    the   kindness    of   the Infinite  One, we are addressing our love and faith in His direction. We are lifting  our vision,  feeling the Love waiting to pour down through us. We become  a  vessel  of  this  Love  in  awe  and reverence. Somehow our negative  ego is set aside effortlessly – as it is washed  and  purified  in the joy of being in the flow of divine blessings. Our thoughts  become  God’s  thoughts. They  were always meant to be this way.

When we are in a state of sincere  blessings  we are feeling   at  peace,   since   we  connect   with   God’s love.  There  is a certain  radiance  shining  on  our face that people immediately sense and want to connect  with.

See what  happens  when  you bless  others.  If they need support  and acceptance, they will be drawn toward   you.  If  they  are  angry,  they  will  soften and  soon  get  distracted to  something more positive.   If  they  are  filled  with  fears,  they  will begin to relax and find new solutions to their problems.

If  they  are  seeking   to  intimidate  or  overwhelm you, they will find something more interesting to

do  or  they  will  fade  out  of  your  life.  For  there won’t be any response from you to their negative attitudes. No one to dance with, no one to engage in battle  with and be victorious over.  Or perhaps they might feel your compassion coming toward them.   They   will   pay   attention,  and   suddenly realize  how  good  it feels.  They  will  forget  about their   previous   opinions.   Chances   are  they  will reach out to you in openness  and friendship.

We   are   only   vaguely   aware   of   our   ability   to connect  with  the creative  will of God,  to embody His compassion in our heart, to know how to conduct    our    ways    and    direct    our    steps    in harmony  with  His  all  encompassing intelligence and wisdom. We are His children, we like to be playing  our  own  games  and  chose  our  own  way, we like to test the limits of our free choice and we don’t  like to be told what  to do. So we are not so often  in tune  with  our beautiful  privilege  of blessing  with  Love.  We  get  distracted and  soon we waste  our  energy  by getting  upset  and  angry at some people,  because  we forgot to tune in with the will of God,  which  is to bless  His children  at every  turn.  When  we  bless  others   with  all  our heart,   we  forget   to  be  self-conscious  or competitive  with  others.  We  are  saving  a  great deal of energy and are spared many emotional upheavals.

As we persevere in wholeheartedly blessing  God for  His  blessings  of Life,  we  are  open  to receive His   blessings   back,   to  sense   the   support,   the peace,  the  loving-kindness and  security  that comes   from   His  enveloping  Presence.  We  feel loved and honored.  Therefore the criticism  and antagonism of  others  do  not  touch  us  as  much. We  see  them  with  a  sense  of  humor  and compassion. We  look  to see  if there  is any  truth to their assertions, and if there is, we accept them willingly,    without    feeling    unworthy   or   upset about   it.  Because   we  know  we  are  loved  from Above. And we know we can always improve ourselves, and learn from our mistakes. Blessing God   lifts   us   to   the   higher   levels   of   joy   and awareness that bring us freedom  and ease.

As an example,  let us say that a co-worker at the office is secretly  critical,  jealous  or hostile  toward you.  Most  often  you  can  read  these  feelings  on their  face,  voice  tone  and  body  language.  Now you have a choice.  You can react to their attitude with   apprehension,  which   soon   will   turn   into anger  and  then  aversion,  even  hate.  The  trouble is your opponent will also read that on your face. You   may   both   be  brooding   on  like  this  for  a painful long time with this dark cloud of hostility hanging   over  your  heads.   Sooner   or  later,   the pent up frustration will flare up into some very unpleasant or destructive encounter or action.

Or,  you  have  another   choice.   You  can  mentally place  this  person  in  the  care  of  the  all  powerful One  who  created  each  soul.  You  can  ask  Him  to handle  this situation  through  His blessings.  Leave it to Him to work things out.

Also  you  may  try  to understand the  basic  reason for  the  hostility  of  this  co-worker,   which  usually stems from feeling threatened  in some way. It may be the fear of being outshined, or compared unfavorably, or the dread  of being  replaced.  Or it may be the fear of having  to face his own failures, or having  to change.  Knowing  this, you may come to a more compassionate understanding of him. Compassion brings wisdom.  Wisdom  brings us closer to the Infinite  Creator.  Wisdom  allows us to channel His blessings  in our world, through us.

As you choose to persevere  in silently blessing  this opponent with all the blessings of peace, joy, love, safety,   strength   and   security   from   Above,   your inner  thoughts  are  written  on your  face.  Chances are, sooner or later your opponent will change his mind   about   you.   He   will   suddenly   reverse   his attitude. If not, something  will change in your situation   or  maybe   in  his  situation.   Perhaps   he will move  to another  job. Perhaps  he will intrigue and lie to have you fired, and he will succeed.   This is the time to trust in the power of blessings.  Soon you   may   find   a  much   more   pleasant   job  with better    pay,    with    easier    commute    and    more

benefits. Or you may find another rewarding and creative way to bring income. We can bless every situation  and  flow  with  it, knowing  all works  out for  a blessing  when  we  tune  in  with  God’s guidance.

The  best  blessing  that  ever  happened  in my  own life  was  when  I was  abruptly  fired  from  my  well paid, comfortable secretarial position, in Zurich. There  had  been  some  fierce  jealousies   I  hadn’t been aware of. I wasn’t angry or hurt. I asked God for  guidance.   On  the  spot  I  decided   this  was  a great opportunity for a vacation.  I first traveled  to my  hometown, Geneva,  and  within  2 days  I bumped  into this special  young man, Joshua,  who was  passing   through   while  touring   Europe.   We became  beloved  companions for life! I will forever be grateful for this magnificent perfect timing of divine   intervention  that  changed   my  life.  “And they  lived   together   happily   forever   after”   came true.

The blessings  from the One who supports  the Universe  are  powerful.  But  they  need  to  be anchored  in our own heart first.

Perhaps  you  are  wondering:  “Are  my  own blessings  that powerful?”  Remember, the power of your    blessings    depends    on   the   strength    and depths  of  your  connection  in  love  with  the Almighty  One.

Great Masters  of loving-kindness could restore health  on  every  level  with  a  nod,  or  a  smile,  a chuckle, a word of inspiration, with a heartfelt reassurance and comforting words. Through their depths  of devotion  and their  powerful  connection with  the  Supreme  One,  they  could  change situations  and  save  entire  communities  from disaster.

A Healing  Formula for Couples

The   art   of  blessing   is  the   most   profound   and powerful  way to heal difficult  relationships.  Here is a healing formula that has worked wonders in helping  couples  repair  and  renew  their  marriage that   was   on  the   brink   of  divorce.   It  was   first initiated  by  a  wise  and  greatly  successful counselor.

What  is his secret  formula?   He patiently  listened to each  one separately  with  great  empathy.  Then, he would  exhort  the  wife  to connect  with  God  in prayer and secretly bless her husband with loving appreciation,  in  every  aspect  of  his  life  ~ envisioning   him   to   feel   good   the   moment   he wakes up in the morning, to be inspired with his prayers,  enjoying  his breakfast,  his transportation to work, his activities in the work place and his friendships     and      partnerships.     Seeing      him

returning  home  feeling  fulfilled  and  relaxed, grateful and optimistic  about his life.

He  encouraged  her  to  persevere   in  blessing  him for at least ten minutes a day, to connect with the “Nitzots  Elokim,”  the  divine  spark  of his  soul,  as well as the love and the protection  from Above.

And when the counselor  speaks  with the husband, he encourages him to also secretly bless his wife in the  same  manner,  with  gratefulness and compassion, envisioning the best in every detail of her life, in her feelings,  her courage,  strength  and joy.      He   strongly   encourages   him   to   take   10 minutes  a day to do this work of blessing  that will bring peace and joy in both their lives.

When  couples  can  connect  with  the  Presence   of God  and  secretly   bless  each  other,  for  only  ten minutes  a day, their love for each other will revive and  will  grow  deeper  each  day.     Soon  their differences of opinion  will hardly  be remembered. The deeper meaning of their union will become revealed to them and honored in their heart.  The painful  issues  between  them  will  be  shared together  gently,  respectfully, and lovingly  in a way that  honors  both  of them.   They  will seek  to help each other in the best way they can, with understanding and compassion.

This  formula  is worth  applying  even  in  the  best, most   successful   relationships  since   there   is  no limit to how high we can get.   This formula  is also a  true  blessing  in  difficult  relationships.     It connects  us with the higher  realms  of divine  Love that  can  nourish,   transform   and  heal  all.    This formula  can  be used  to heal  ourselves  first  when we consciously become aware of and focus on the everlasting compassion of our Creator.   When  we feel  this  compassion  toward  us,  we  see  our  own life surrounded with God’s blessings in its many aspects.   Then  we  are  able  to  let  go  of  our  self criticism,  self  deprecation  and  self  sabotage.    As we  learn   to  have   compassion  on  ourselves,   we learn  to have  compassion on others  and our blessings  become  more and more enthusiastic and sincere.

There  are some  relationships where  only  one partner is willing to bless another.    Still, the relationship  will   improve   if   only   one   party   is willing  to continue  blessing  the other with trust in the help from Above.

Blessing   with  love  will  also  help  us  release   the strong cords of anger and resentment that bind us to someone  when we are finding  ourselves  in a co- dependent  relationship.   It will  help  us  stand  up for ourselves in a wise, loving, imaginative, lighthearted way.    It will help us release the relationship   if   it   is   destructive   to   us.       For

unconditional love gives us freedom,  it releases  all fear and destructive clinging.   If necessary,  it gives us  the  strength  to  take  some  initiative,   to  reach out for help from other people willing to help, to receive counseling, to let go of our guilt and self blame,  and  to  walk  away  from  that  toxic relationship,  with  assurance  and  confidence, knowing   we  will  be  supported   and  assisted   by Divine Providence.  We can speak to God about all this:   “God, I cannot  handle  this person,  but I can place   this   whole   relationship   in   Your   hands. Please handle it for me and bless it for me.   I completely trust in Your competence!”

Ultimately,  blessings   and  prayers   can  heal   any kind of situation,  for they connect  us to the Source of all Good. They dissolve our fears of helplessness and  loneliness.  They  protect  us.     But  deep resentment, fear and hatred  will bind us to people and situations with powerful ties until we resolve them.   Often,  it takes  persistent  prayer,  over  and over, until these ties finally dissolve.   But they will, for God wants us to be free. We came here to this world to learn, to overcome,  and to be free.

For many of us, blessing others who have been obnoxious  and  immensely  irritating  or hurtful  to us can seem impossible, even if it is for only 2 seconds. Yet we can begin by asking God to take charge  of  them!    We  can  release  them  in  God’s hands  and trust that things  will work out one way

or another.   After  all, if He can hold the Universe in balance, He is also capable of handling our situation.   We can give Him a little credit!

For an abusing kind of person, we can repeat this inner affirmation:  “I bless you and I place you in the  hands  of  God,  and  release  you  to  find  your good  elsewhere.”   If we persist  in doing  this with faith,  we  will  see  these  kinds  of  people  moving away from our life.

And   for   ourselves    we   can   pray:      “Master   of Creation,  thank  you for being here, ready  to help me release  and let go.    Your eternal  healing Presence   is  washing   away  all  the  toxins  of  my hurts           and    fears    and    anger.         I    am    now communing             with      Your      life-giving      Loving kindness.”

Blessing is a wonderful way to help us forgive ourselves and others.    Forgiveness gives us a marvelous  feeling  of freedom.   It lifts a huge  load off our backs.  It is pure joy.

When   family   and   friends    get   together,    many people  have  initiated  a tradition  of blessings  that is giving a whole new spectrum  to their gathering. As  they  sit  in  a  circle,  they  take  turns  speaking words of blessings  for each other.  This makes it so much   easier   to  express   our   love,   appreciation, respect    and   admiration   toward    others;    those

feelings  we tend to feel embarrassed to express  in a gathering or even in person.   This is giving us a unique opportunity to celebrate a birthday, an engagement, a wedding, a birth or any special occasion, or no reason at all, in a much more meaningful and healing  way. There is some magic in this, for God’s desire  for us is exactly  to do this

–  to  see  the  soul   of  another,   tune   in  with   it,

support it, bring it out and honor it. Some of our grandchildren are experts when it comes to the art of  giving  blessings,  especially  on  their  birthdays. They  can  spend  a  few  minutes   on  each  person, finding special things to bless them with.

Most  often,  we  do  not  express  these  feelings  in words.   Perhaps  most  of us speak  with  great  love and respect and appreciation about someone only after their death.  But isn’t this a bit too late?  Why not  do  it  for  each  other  before?    We  all  need  it now.

Blessing   others   becomes   much   easier   when   we learn   to   tune   in   with   the   blessings   from   our Creator. The more we become aware, the more we begin to realize that indeed, we are treasured and supported   always.     We  then  let  go  of  our  own habitual  self  criticism,  for  we  can  sense  the Awesome   Master   of  Creation   is  understanding, loves us anyway, and is waiting for us to turn our attention   away  from  ourselves   and  our  failings,

and  toward  Him  instead.    This  is our easiest  way to heal.

We  are  here   to  honor,   inspire   and  uplift   each other   and   the   deeper   the   bonds   of   true   love, expressed  in blessings,  the easier it becomes  to do just that.

Personal Blessings From The Infinite  One

What   can  we  do  to  awaken   and  become   more attuned  to  the  immense,  eternal  loving  kindness and blessings  from  our Creator?   It is a matter  of trust.   We can choose  to forget  about  our doubts, our fear of the Great  Unknown.    We can be like a child  curling  up  in  the  arms  of  our  most  loving mother or father.  For most of us, their tender love for  us  was  our  first  experience   of  love  in  this world.    We can see ourselves  standing  in the Presence  of the Eternal  One and hearing  the Voice of immense  compassion, kindness  and peace.

We can choose to listen quietly and receive the personal  blessings  ever waiting  to reach  out to us from the Supreme  Source of all compassion.

The more we can tune in with this communication of divine secrets, the more we feel supported and embraced in the love of our Infinite, all knowing, Creator.   We can trust that we can discover  many

more  wondrous  truths  that  will  guide  us through every  aspect  of our lives.   And  as we learn  to live in  this  trust  and  joy  of  living,  we  find  it  easy  to bless others, no matter who they are.  We learn to entrust   our   loved   ones   into   the   Infinite,   life- giving, all healing, compassionate Presence of our Creator.      And  we  are  also  ready  to  entrust everyone  else  into  this  Presence,   no  matter  how they  are  relating   to  us.    We  can  reflect  over  to them the same blessings we have received and absorbed  from  our  eternal  Companion,  from worlds on High.

Blessing God and His creation is establishing His kingdom  in this  world.  It is opening  our  heart  to His benevolent influx of kindness,  to the joy of His blissful  Love. It is joining  our will with His will. It is  like   walking   hand   in  hand   with   Him.   It  is embracing  the unconditional love  of creative  Life in action.

from the book:

From Darkest Times to Streams of Blessings: The Lubavitcher Rebbe – Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson

Who is this Rabbi?

In  the  past  few  decades   we  have  been  blessed with  the  presence   of  a  most  powerful   giant  of loving kindness and wisdom, Master of Miracles, known    worldwide   as   the   Lubavitcher   Rebbe, Rabbi  Menachem Mendel  Schneerson, a brilliant leader   and  innovator,  a  friend   to  all  mankind. His natural genius and inspired guidance is influencing and shaping the lives of an ever increasing number of people in hundreds of thousands.  He has paid special attention to the education of children,  to family life, to the downtrodden, the prisoners, and especially to countless  Jews disconnected from their spiritual heritage.   It is from his loving support, guidance, encouragement and a certain mysterious undercurrent of miraculous interventions, that now  thousands  of  active  Lubavitch  centers, schools,    Yeshivos    and   synagogues   have blossomed and stay fully active in more than 61 countries,   including   Russia,    many    European

countries, Latin America,  Australia, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Nepal, and of course in the United States, Canada  and Israel.

If you have been privileged to be attuned  with the spiritual strength of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, you know  how  life-transforming it  was  just  to  be  in his    presence.       You    know    that    around    his influence miracles can manifest in ingenious, unexpected, and often stunning  ways.

The Rebbe was masterful at awakening new strength    and   energy,    hope   and   faith   in   our hearts.   It would take many books to relate all the miracles  that manifested from him.

Life Transforming Contacts

Having   heard   so  much   about   the  Lubavitcher Rebbe,  Joshua  and  I decided  to visit  him  during a  temporary stay  in  New  York,  and  we  were  to stand  on  line  for  a few  hours  to have  the opportunity to contact  him  in person  for  maybe two or three seconds.

“I am looking  for a photograph of the Rebbe  with a smile on his face”, said Joshua, “have you ever found one?”

“I wish I had,” I responded, “he always  looks very serious.”

“Yeah.   Too serious.”

You  see,  we were  rather  spoiled.     We were privileged to be close to Rabbi Shlomo  Carlebach. Our  friendship  was  lit  with  shining   smiles  and lots of chances  to spend  time together  with many friends, learning, listening to his soul awakening melodies and songs.   It was enchanting.  Golden moments   of   heart-warming   insights.       Joy   at every  turn.   And when  we were filled  to the brim with  all this  loving  kindness, Reb  Shlomo  would fly  to  another  town  and  let  us  integrate   all  this for a few months.

So we went  to stand  on line.   (This  certainly  did not  fit in Joshua’s  style.   He  never  stood  in line for anything, especially not at work as a Medical Doctor.)   But as he found himself  there, he found the  experience  interesting,  being  in  good company.  And he remembered that the Rebbe himself,  who  was  then  in  his  eighties,  was standing   there  for  eight  hours  in  a  row,  giving and  making  soul  contact  with  each  person  ready to receive.

Once,  someone  had  asked  the Rebbe:  “Aren’t  all these long exhausting hours standing and distributing too strenuous for you?”   The Rebbe answered: “Why? If you were counting  your diamonds, would you be tired?”

Lo  and  behold,   when   Joshua’s   turn  came,   the

Rebbe  glanced  at  him  in  his  unique  laser  beam

all  knowing  way.  Then  he  smiled.    Smiling  was quite unusual  for him in those days.

Years later, talking about this encounter now, Joshua  recalls:

“It wasn’t a regular smile.   It was a sunburst  of magnificent  scope,   it  was  kind  of  earth shattering! I am still in awe.”

A few hours  later,  I was also waiting  on line with the women,  enjoying,  watching  the people  there. I  didn’t  expect  much  to  happen   in  this  two  to three second encounter with an elder Rebbe overburdened   with   too   many   requests.       Yet, when   my   turn   came   to  stand   in  front   of  the Rebbe, to my amazement, I was greeted with a radiant   smile!     Not   only   a  smile,   but   an  eye contact that I still remember today as a living, present, ineffable connection.  It was the contact with the unfathomable depths, the vast, ancient, vital,  loving  power  of  the  Heavenly  Realms.    It was  the  contact  with  the  loving  kindness  of  the great   Chassidic  masters   and  holy   people   from many previous generations.  It was their glorious souls working with the Rebbe.    It was their connections  with  the  Almighty   reaching   out  to us.    It  was  the  promise   of  redemption  and  the end   of  doubt   and   suffering   for  us.     It  was   a glimpse  into the times of the Messianic era.

Half an hour after this brief encounter, I was still shivering.

“You   are  going   to  recover   and   you  will stay healthy”

In a hospital  in Sydney,  Australia, a woman  was lying  in bed  at night,  deathly  ill,  drifting  in and out of sleep alone in a room.   She had been given the wrong medication by mistake  and the doctors were  extremely concerned about  her.    Suddenly she  sees  someone  entering  through  the  door:   A white   bearded   Rabbi   clad  in  a  black   coat  and black hat.  He stands at the foot of the bed, his penetrating  blue  eyes  focused  on  her,  and declares:

“You   are   going   to   recover   and   you   will   stay healthy.”

He spoke a few words of blessings  in Hebrew  and then he was gone.

She knew  that  this was not just a dream.   It was too  real,  and  besides,  she  immediately began  to feel better. Her sense of well being continued to improve.        That  morning,  when  the doctors examined her again,  they were puzzled  and most relieved  at  the  sudden  change  in  her  condition, since they had anticipated the worst.

The  next  day  her  anguished  parents,   who  had flown  in  from  out  of  town,  were  sitting  in  her

room.     Soon   after,   her  brother,   who  had  also flown   in  from   another   area,   walked   in.     After warm family greetings, he looked around and announced:

“This is really strange. Just yesterday I had an amazing   dream,  and  here  I  am  now,  in  exactly the same  room  as in my dream.   I saw you lying there  in your  bed.  I felt apprehensive for I knew you were in a dangerous condition, near death. Then  I saw this strange  man  entering  your  room and standing  at the foot  of your  bed.   He looked like  a Rabbi.  He  said:  ‘You  are  going  to  recover and  you  will  stay  healthy’,   then  he  said  a  few words  that I didn’t  understand.  Then  I woke  up. I immediately made plane reservations to come here to be with you.”

“So you also saw him!” exclaimed the woman in wonder.    I knew  this  Rabbi  was  really  there  for me.  I began to feel better immediately after!”

She and her brother exchanged more correlating details about the appearance of this mysterious person who had manifested in a vision and in a dream   at  exactly   the  same  time.     The  parents didn’t   know   what   to  make   of  all  this.     They enquired  of the medical  staff to find out who was this  Rabbi  who  had  visited  their  daughter.   No one had seen or heard of him.  Visitors were not allowed  in the middle of the night.

A few weeks later the woman was completely recovered.  One day, as she was walking in the streets   of  Sydney,   she   saw   posted   in   a  store window, a large photograph of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,  stationed  in his Crown  Heights  center  in New York.

She stared in shock:

“That’s  him!   He is the one who saved  my life!   I

want to find out all about him!”

She  entered  the  store  and  met  with  one  of  the

Lubavitcher Rebbe’s  emissaries.

“Who is this Rabbi?”   She wanted  to know.

A life transforming presence

Through  his  unfailing, joyful,  powerful  example the Rebbe  inspired  countless  souls  in the blissful art of loving-kindness in action.   He reached  out to the world with organized, efficient,  masterful pathways  of  kindness   and  faith.     His  love  for people  was  boundless.      His  heart  was inconceivably vast.   Throughout his ministry he connected  with  many  millions   of  people, including those who didn’t know anything  about him.  Being in his presence  was life transforming. Ceaselessly and with all the skills of his intuitive vision   and   wisdom,   he   helped   transform  our

world  in  a myriad  ways.    His  dynamic  strength and loving encouragement focused on us like the light of a laser beam, inspired  us to live in the joy of serving  God and man. He was a healing  to our heart   after  the  relentless  nightmares  of  World War  II  and  the  Stalin  era.    He  was  constantly praying and intervening for our cause, for our awakening, so that  we  may  trust  in our  mission as Jewish  souls,  strengthening it and  expressing it, and consequently learning to draw forth new blessings  into our lives.

Those  who were  privileged to spend  the Sabbath or  Holiday  prayer  services  with  him  in the electrifying atmosphere of his Crown Heights Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York, were carried to heights they had never dreamed of.  The singing together  was awesome, transformative, empowering.   Many  thousands were  so  uplifted that they chose to dedicate their lives to communicating  this  message  of  loving  kindness and  deeper   wisdom   to  as  many   as  they  could reach.    This is how thousands of schools and yeshivas are now flourishing all over the world, through  countless  miracles.   The number  of these Lubavitch centers has doubled since the Rebbe passed on in 1994.

The  archives  at the Lubavitch Center  are replete with many thousands of grateful letters and testimonies  relating  life-saving  interventions from  the  Almighty  that  had  manifested through

the blessings  of the Rebbe.     These  included situations resolved  when there was no hope of remedy,   dreams  or  strong  intuitive   guidance   at the precise  timing,  providential encounters in times  of  great  need,  life-saving coincidences defying   all  rational   explanations,  stunning rescues  from  desperate  situations  such  as terminal diseases,  and mysterious, inexplicable apparitions  at  split  second  beneficial  timing.  If you consult Chabad on the internet, you will find many  fascinating accounts,  at beismoshiach.org, or chabad.org.

There  is no safer  place  in the world  than

Israel!”

At the onset of the Gulf War in 1990, Saddam Hussein   was  threatening  us  with   annihilation. He was strongly supported by more than two hundred million Muslims, living in huge lands surrounding our tiny country,  who were cheering him on and ready for action.   Aside from that, the opinion of world politics was being convincingly manipulated by the multi, multi billion dollar interests   in  the  oil  from  Arab  countries.    Seen from an objective view, our situation looked desperate and  bound  for  disaster.    That  was  the very     time      when      the     Lubavitcher     Rebbe

announced – “There  is no safer place in the world than  Israel!     No  one  needs  to  run  away  from there! You don’t need to be afraid of those scud missiles!”

Wasn’t  this  some  kind  of  an  outrageous statement? How could he know?

He also urged everyone  to intensify  their prayers and  deeds  of kindness.  Soon  after,  50 scud missiles   were  fired  at  Israel.     Each  one  could have killed or injured  hundreds,  even thousands. Yet, at the end of the war it was found  that from this avalanche of deadly missiles laden with 550 pounds  of explosives,  only one single person died (accidentally).     When apartment buildings collapsed,    somehow    nobody    happened    to   be there.    When  a  main  city  underground  gas  line was  hit,  that  line  had  just  been  turned  off  that very morning for repairs.   When a scud fell in a courtyard   next  to  a  synagogue   filled  with  300 people  in  prayer,  it  just  laid  there  without exploding!     The  list  of  miracles   goes  on.    The Rebbe was right.

More   details   with   photographs  can   be   found about some of these stunning  miracles  in a small book called: “Missiles, Masks and Miracles”, published  by Aish Hatorah.

In Loving  Touch,  through  Time and Space

Another  story:

One evening a Chassid (devoted student) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe was very upset with his Rebbe over  some   of  his  own  failures.     He  sat  down wearily  on his bed.   Across  the room  on the wall hung  a large  portrait  of the Rebbe.   The Chassid was  taking  off  his  shoes.    One  shoe  in hand,  he looked   up  at  the  portrait   and   on  impulse   he threw his shoe smack into the Rebbe’s face.

Several  months  went by.  He had forgotten  about that  outburst  of his  as well  as the  reason  for  it. Some success  had come his way, he felt good and he  was  eager  to  go  visit  his  Rebbe  again.     He waited in line to see him, among several hundred others.

When  his turn  finally  came  the Rebbe  looked  at him, put his hand over his own cheek and said in Yiddish: “That smack did hurt!”   The Chassid suddenly   remembered.    He  turned  white.    The Rebbe  handed  him a piece  of cake and gave him a blessing.   The next moment,  before  the chassid had a chance to stammer his apologies, he was already   being   led   forward   to   allow   all   those waiting behind to have their turn.

A student  at the Sorbonne University

Many  events  and  details  about  the  Rebbe’s  life have been recorded,  such as:

Before  World  War  2,  the  Rebbe,  in  his  thirties, was   a  student   at   the   Sorbonne   University   in Paris.    During  the  discourses   of  the  professors, the  Rebbe  unfailingly   had  his  attention  focused into his own sacred books.   At one point, one professor,    resenting    that,   strode   over   to   the Rebbe.

“I  would  like  you  to  repeat  some  of  what  I just spoke about”, he demanded  to know.

The Rebbe answered: “With pleasure”.   And he repeated  word  for  word  what  the  Professor  had said from the beginning  of the lecture.

In   1940,   the   Gestapo   was   already   occupying Paris.   It was getting extremely dangerous to be known as a Jew.   A few were able to flee to the southern part of France.    One day the Rebbe returned  to his hotel.   He found a Gestapo  officer standing  in the lobby, studying  the registry  list of all  the  guests.    What  could  the  Rebbe  do?    He walked  up  to the  officer  and  stood  by,  scanning the list with him!

“Officer, permit me to show you where my name appears on this list.   Here it is: ‘Schneerson’.” Obviously   a  Jewish   name,   aside  from  the  fact that this man standing  next to the officer  looked very Jewish!

“That’s   fine  –  there   is  no  problem   here!”   the officer answered  correctly.

In  1940  the  Rebbe   managed   to  escape   to  the United States.   From there, very few people know how many people he rescued with underground assistance.    He never  mentioned  anything  about the  miracles   God  blessed  him  with  throughout his life.

While    studying    in    Europe,    the    Rebbe    had received  an engineering degree.   When he settled in New York, he worked for the US navy, among countless    other   activities.    He   designed    some vitally   helpful   features   to   perfect   their submarines.    For  this  he  was  given  an  annual royalty  of more  than  $40,000  for the rest  of his life.  The  Rebbe   chose  to  give  it  all  to  charity. Later on he distributed it one dollar at a time to those  who  came  to  see  him,  so  that  they  could have the merit of giving it (or its equivalent) to charity.   This is why on many occasions over the years, many thousands of people stood in line to receive a blessing and a dollar.   On holidays he distributed pieces of cake.

A Healing  Embrace

This following story occurred in 1946, at the Gare d’Orli in Paris.   This central train terminal was bustling   with  thousands   of  people   coming   and going.   On one of the platforms  the Rebbe  waited with  intense  anticipation,  accompanied  by  a group of friends.   At last, a train arriving from Germany   pulled  in.    The  Rebbe  scanned  all  the faces of the exiting passengers.  An older woman appeared.    The  Rebbe  ran  over  and  assisted  her. He took her in his arms and didn’t let go of his embrace  for a full half an hour!   His friends  stood around them beaming with joy, and crying with emotion.    This lady was the Rebbe’s mother, Rebbetzin  Chanah!

When  her  beloved  husband  had  been  sentenced to 20 years in Syberian  camps,  she volunteered to follow  him  and  was  imprisoned  there  with  him for many years.    Miraculously, they had been released in 1945, but her husband, the Rebbe’s beloved  father,  weakened  by years of hunger,  had died  on the  long  train  ride  from  Siberia  to Moscow.

In Moscow  Rebbetzin  Chanah  remained  in hiding until  the  Rebbe  managed  to  have  her  smuggled into Poland,  and from  there  into Germany  where she  was  able  to  board  a  train  bound  for  Paris. This escape had been possible  only because  at the

end  of  World  War  II,  Stalin  hadn’t  yet  re- established his absolute control at the borders. During  that short window  of time, the Rebbe  was able   to   rescue   a   few   other   people   who   had suffered immeasurably in jails and camps.

The   Rebbe   flew   back   to   New   York   with   his mother.   He found her a pleasant  apartment  near the Lubavitch  headquarters in Crown Heights and he went  to visit her every  day for half an hour  to chat and have tea with her, not withstanding the immense  pressure  of his responsibilities.

Longing  for Messianic Times

No  wonder  so  many  Lubavitcher  followers believed  the Rebbe  was bringing  Messianic  times to  our  entire  world.    He  certainly  did  give  us  a taste  of those  times  we  are  all  waiting  for. Personally  I believe  the Rebbe  prepared  us and is now,  more   than  ever,  still  strengthening  us  to express   in   our   own   lives   those   extraordinary times   of  loving   kindness,   expansion   and awakening.  And as this new light rises in people’s hearts, it will gather in momentum and become immensely  attractive  to many  more  millions.  We all can certainly  help bring the future Redemption much closer through the priviledge of our good choices.

The  Light  of  understanding  from  Above  is powerful.     Like  a  candle’s   flame,   it  catches   on from one heart to many others.     It grows exponentially.   In spite  of all appearances, many can sense that mankind  is slowly awakening  from its deep slumber.   In the worlds Above and in our world,  magnificent,  devoted  work  is  being engineered from behind the scenes to prevent mankind from being destroyed in tragic disasters caused through our enormously dangerous technology.

Lately  the  world  has  been  apprehensively witnessing   criminal   despots   boasting   that  they have terrifying  weapons  at their disposal  ready to use, looking for opportunities to gain power with them and vowing  to “wipe Israel off the map”.   In the  higher  Realms,  this  danger  was  known  even way  before  it occurred.     How  are  we being protected?   Seeing all this, many high souls have chosen to be born in our times to prevent such catastrophes.     They   can   do  this   in  our   world through   their  loving   connection  with  the Almighty  One and their other gifts and talents.

For so long, mankind  has been yearning  for times of peace, justice, righteousness, safety, prosperity and harmony between people and nations.All the more  so, how  poignantly  the Jewish  people  have been   yearning   for   such   times   throughout  the many centuries!    How intensely have we been envisioning and longing for these Messianic  times

of universal joy, genuine kindness and deepening wisdom,    times   of   complete    health    when   the human  spirit  will  expand  and  reveal  at long  last its   glorious    potential    and    genius!        We    are basically  homesick  for these times.

Many prophecies from different sources have predicted  the arrival of these times.  Many of their descriptions have already  manifested recently. Many more are yet waiting  to be manifested.  The longing   for  these   times   is  so  intense   that,   for many  of  us,  our  inner  vision   of  how  they  will manifest     has    become     very    descriptive    and defined.    The  trouble  is  that  everyone  has  their own   unique   vision,   and   these   visions   do   not match!    We  quickly  forget  that  when  we  try  to define  the plans of the Infinite  One and how they will manifest,  we fall short of accuracy!

Let’s  face  it,  we  are  but  at  the  level  of kindergarteners  and  are  not  yet  capable  of mastering Divine higher mathematics or nuclear physics!   When  it comes  to defining  the arrival  of the   Messiah,   there   is  a  wise   saying   about   it: “Those  who  don’t  know  speak  up, but those  who really know won’t tell.”

Many  of  us  have  already  created  Messianic moments    in   our    lives.        We    have    gathered together,   allowing   our   spirit   to  soar,   dancing,

experiencing times of great rejoicing  with genuine love toward  each other, times of inspiration, deep learning   and  prayer,   being  aware,   grateful   and awed.

We  can  recognize  and  honor  the  good  and beneficial  aspects  in all  that  is unfolding  around us  in  our  world.    We  can  trust  that  the  Creator knows  what  He  is doing.    Why  should  we  doubt His   credentials?      We   can   trust   that   He   will continue    manifesting   His   wonders    and revelations in His own way through the willing participation of many people.    We can detect so many signs of a great awakening:  A New Light is arising in the hearts of many millions all over the world.   Stronger than ever, there is an eagerness among   most   people   to  decipher   the   mysteries hiding    behind    our    physical    world,    and    this longing  is mostly  coming  from love, from a desire for personal  integrity,  higher awareness, strength, courage,  understanding and healing.

The Power of Intervention

Our  Masters   of  saintliness   have  taught   us  that great  holy  souls  have  the  power  of  intervention even after they leave this world.  Their true self is intensely  alive and more present  for us than ever. Any time we ask for their help in connecting with

Divine    guidance    and   assistance,    there    is   an answer  available.    They  love  us much  more  than we can imagine and they stay connected with us, beyond  our boundaries of space and time, beyond the borders  between  our physical  and higher realities.

They continually seek for ways to reach out to us, despite   our   thick   barriers   of   fear,   doubt   and mental  restlessness.  It takes great effort to pierce through   those   layers   of  resistances  and  anger. Our  very  act  of  asking  makes  us  receptive   and soon we are able to feel their presence bringing comfort   and  understanding.  They  are  delighted when  they  can  influence  our  state  of  awareness, when  they  can  strengthen   and  guide   us.  Their whole  being  is  of  love;  they  eagerly  respond   to those who seek their assistance.

There are extreme situations when we are too despondent or frightened  to even  think  of asking for help.   In those situations, Holy Masters may inspire   someone   else  with  a  receptive   mind  to come rescue us in some way or another. At other times,  we  may  also  be  privileged  with  the opportunity to save others from despair or despondency.  We  can  do  this  through  our willingness to listen patiently to their challenges, with  an attitude  of respect,  acceptance, kindness and  patient  help.  We  can  ask  them  the  kind  of

questions   and  suggestions  that  help  them  focus on their own inner resources  and potential.

The  Lubavitcher  Rebbe  encouraged  us  to  know that  as  we  humbly  ask  for  Divine  guidance,   we will receive the clarity and help from on High to express the wisdom and strength  that is needed to help others.

Mysterious Guidance Available now

During his 40 years of leadership, the Rebbe answered  many thousands  of personal  letters that were  mailed,  faxed,  and  e-mailed  to his office  in New York, from all over the world.   Shortly before his  passing,  the  Rebbe  had  urged  those  close  to him  to  have  these  letters  made  known  and available.  They were all collected  into 24 volumes and organized according to their dates of being written.   These letters are offering a rich variety of the Rebbe’s advice on education, relationships, medical   inquires   ,  spiritual   and  personal direction.   Referred to as the Igros Kodesh’ (holy letters), they revealed the Rebbe’s attitudes and insights  into  the  many  personal  questions addressed  to him.

More people who needed answers to their urgent questions   began   to  write   letters   to  the  Rebbe, stating  their  request.     Then  they  asked  for guidance  from God. Then they looked  into one of

those  volumes   of  letters  and  opened   a  page  at random.    To  their  amazement  they  often  found that  the volume  they  picked  somehow  opened  to the page giving an answer pertaining to their situation!

I   had   heard   about   this   from   a   friend,   but   I wondered   if  it  would   work   for  me.     “Maybe   I could  also  be  misled?  Maybe  I’d  try  to fit  in my own interpretation.” One day, on my way to the Western  Wall,  I visited  for a few minutes  the gift shop  of  my  friend   Nicole,   a  dedicated   Chabad lady,  in the Jewish  Quarter  of the Old  City.   She had a few of those precious volumes with her published   in  French.      Finding   me  particularly vexed   by   a  situation   that   seemed   to  have   no solution, she suggested I consult with one of her books of ‘Igros Kodesh’.   I considered: “What do I have to lose?  Maybe I’ll feel foolish.   But I already feel  foolish  with  my  unanswered  questions. Besides,  if I don’t  get  the  right  answers  in these books  I can  just  disregard  them.”    Since  I had  a lot of questions,  I wrote six of them on a list.

I asked for guidance,  opened the book, and placed my  list  into  it.    I  was  in  a  hurry,  so  I  quickly scanned  the letter on the page I had chosen randomly.     I  was  amazed!    This  was  one  of  my most needed answers!   I continued  this procedure another 5 times.   To my amazement each place I found  except  for  one,  gave  me  a  powerful   and

pertinent  answer!  What reassuring  relief it was to know  I had  a way  to deal  with  the  situation  and be helpful.

I  have  heard  many  testimonies  about  these amazing   answers.   These   can   save   us  years   of wasted time in therapy!

The Exam

Gabriel  was a student  at the Sorbonne  University in Paris.  He was experiencing torment as he was preparing for his final exams for his law degree. Having  taken  unsecured   loans  for  his  education he was desperate  to pass.   This test determined a fate  of  fame  and  fortune  or  poverty  and indebtedness.   He  was  desperate  enough  to seek help  from  Moshe,   a  Chabad   Shaliach.     Moshe, putting his arm on Gabriel’s shoulder encouraged him to put his trust in the Almighty.   That did not seem  to  help.  So  Moshe  suggested   that  Gabriel write   a   letter   to   the   Rebbe   spelling    out   his troubles,  place  it in a volume  of the ‘holy  letters’ and  pray  for  an  answer.     The  young  man  was ready  for  any  divine  intervention  he  could  find. He  followed  the  instructions  exactly.  Upon opening  the book he was overjoyed.  This letter he had opened to was congratulating someone on success  with  their  exam!    Gabriel  threw  himself

into his final studies  and all his exams with a new confidence.

The day came  to receive  the report  sheets  stating the final results of the examinations:  He eagerly opened it to be hit with the dreaded words: “FAILED!!”

Like a madman  Gabriel ran back to Moshe.

“Your holy letters are a joke!   I shouldn’t have believed  such  superstitions.   I  don’t  understand it!  Or maybe I didn’t pray enough? Maybe I did something  wrong?”

He  was  devastated.   His  deep  debt  from  all  his years of studying law loomed before him like a mountain.

Through the fog of his thoughts he heard Moshe: “Trust  that whatever  happens,  happens  for a blessing.   There are no mistakes.   Trust in the Almighty One.   I suggest that you ask the Rebbe again.   Write  him a letter,  pour out your heart  to him and trust that the Almighty  will help.”

Gabriel,   against   all  the  clamors   of  his  rational mind, wrote another letter to the Rebbe.   Then, closing  his eyes  in meditation, he opened  a book of  ‘Holy  Letters’.     It  read:  “You  have  been  told that  you  failed  your  exams.     Don’t  accept   that

answer.    Consult  with  your  Professor  and  insist that  he  review  your  writings.”    Gabriel  stared  at those  words.  He  had  never  considered  that  the fault  of  his  failure  might  not  be  his!   This  letter had  been  written   years  ago  to  someone   in  the same situation  as Gabriel’s!

Rushing   to   his   Professor,    Gabriel   insisted   he review  the  exam  papers  again.    ”There  must  be some mistake.”   The professor refused. – “I have studied your sheets – good work – but some important  points are sorely missing  – sorry.”   The professor  walked  away  leaving  Gabriel  frozen  in his place.

Over  the  next  few  days  Gabriel  stalked  the professor  using  all the powers  of persuasion that he had intended to employ as an attorney of excellence.      Finally  the  professor  reluctantly agreed  to at least  look.     To his surprise  he discovered     that    among    the    many    pages    of Gabriel’s written tests, two of them had been accidentally stuck together!   This explained the missing important points. Gabriel received his passing  grades  and  more  than  that,  his  trust  in God’s  guidance  through  the Rebbe’s  help became an inner strength  that stays with him for life.

Overcoming enormous challenges

The Rebbe’s life is an awesome, epic story of endurance,  faith,  genius   and  triumph   from  the most cruel, dark times under the reign of Stalin’s persecutions and Hitler’s  holocaust,  all the way to a magnificent, exuberant  flow of blessings and miracles that continue to illuminate the lives of millions  world wide.

From   his   residence    in   New   York,   the   Rebbe prayed   for  the  release   of  the  Jewish   prisoners charged for practicing their faith and sent to life threatening labor in freezing camps in Siberia. Through underground networking he was able to wrangle many prisoners out of Stalin’s clutches. Before  1940,  he  was  also  able  to smuggle  out  of Russia his most beloved, heroic, revered, saintly father-in-law,  Rabbi  Yosef  Yitzchok  Schneerson, who    had    emerged     from    Stalin’s     jails    half paralyzed from the beatings he had endured. The Rebbe  asked  him  to  resume  his  leadership position  in New  York.  People  knew  the  power  of the blessings  of Rav Yosef Yitzchok.

In  1946,   when   the  Rebbe   took  office   after  his father-in-law,  Rav  Yosef  Yitzchok,   passed  away, he faced other challenges which seemed insurmountable.   The   generation    of   Jews   post

holocaust    had    become    increasingly   alienated from their spiritual heritage. This was due to the social   pressures,   the   temptations,  the   mindset and expectations of the fifties and sixties.

An  all-pervasive materialistic and  pseudo “scientific”  mentality was permeating most of the belief  systems   and  culture   of  the  majority:   the schools and universities, the worlds of medicine, psychology, philosophy, business,  technology  and all scientific expertise.   Any spiritual or mystical experience   was  defined   as  a  hallucination  or  a dream, and relegated  to the domain  of psychiatry. Of course most psychiatrists in those days didn’t have  a clue  of what  soul  and  spirit  meant  and  it was  too  embarrassing  to  admit  that  they  didn’t know.   Therefore  it was assumed  and taught  that soul  and  spirit  were  just  a  creation  of  the imagination to help  us cope  with  our  challenges. This explanation was also very convenient, for it meant  one  didn’t  need  to  believe  in  and  follow certain  standards  of  integrity  and  codes  of behavior     that    have    been    handed     down    to mankind  through the Torah.

Stories  of miracles  were  dismissed  as ‘bubba meises’  (grandmother’s  tales)  or  simply  denied. It was considered, in most ‘cultured’  circles,  to be incorrect  and out of taste to mention  any spiritual experience,  or  even  just  the  name  of  the Almighty.     Anyone   doing   this  was  likely  to  be

suspected  as being  ‘weird’  and  ‘out  of touch’.    It was a time of dark ignorance  and arrogant  denial of  all  that  was  beyond  reach  of  rational explanation.   Today  we  are  still  slowly  emerging out  of those  dark  years  which  have  robbed  us of the    peace,     joy    and    wisdom     that    spiritual awareness   can   bring   to  us.   We   have   a  lot  of blessed catching  up to do.

You  may  have  wondered:   “How  was  it  possible that indoctrinations such as communism or of the Nazi party were accepted with such fervent belief? How  could  have  millions  embraced  and  held  on these  ideals?    Basically  I believe  this  was  caused by a general rebellion against the fundamental principles of Godly behavior.   Laws of morality, generosity  and  sexual  purity  were  seen  as a nuisance  and  an  imposition. They  had  been handed  down  in a heavy,  dogmatic,  unappealing way in many ways of guilt and fear.”

Only  through   a  conscious   connection  with  our true identity  as the children  of the same Almighty Creator,  can mankind  be saved from tragedies.  To love God with all our heart,  all our soul and with all  our  resources,   and  to  love  and  care  for  our fellow  men  as  well  as  for  ourselves  is  the foundation  for   any   decent,   thriving   and expanding  civilization.

The Rebbe’s  challenge  was enormous.   The whole way of life and thinking in those times made it extremely    difficult    for   the   Jewish    people    to remain   faithful   to   the   exacting   discipline   and many  rules  of  religious   observance.      Also  the grim horror of the Holocaust was still vividly imprinted   in  Jewish  hearts  and  minds  with  the big question: “Why did the Almighty allow this to happen to us?  How can we still trust God after all of  this?     Perhaps   even   our   faith   was   just   an illusion?    We  might  as  well  pretend  we  are  just like anybody  else around us.  Above all we need to survive and make a living.”

Fortunately the  Rebbe  had  his  own  way  of teaching,  infusing  new  enthusiasm  and appreciation for the healing pathways  of Judaism. With his immense  compassion, he recognized  and saw  the  essential   beauty   of  every  soul  with  its Divine   spark.      Through   this,   many      came   to realize  the  blessing  it  is  to  live  as  a  disciplined and wise people devoted to Jewish religious observance in serving the Creator.

Great changes  and a new dawn

Like  all  the  great  Masters  who  came  before  us, when    facing    the   inscrutable   Creator    of   this

staggering    universe,   we   stand   in   utmost   awe. There  is  so  much  more  to  discover  and  absorb. We have no way of estimating  the power of prayer and how this power can change our world.  One of the  teachings   handed   down   to  us  through   the legacy of the Kabbalists is that the survival of mankind  is supported  by 36 extraordinary people who are powerful, pure channels for the light, blessings  and  protection  from  the  Supreme  One. They allow these blessings to be anchored in our world, in spite of all the darkness  created by mankind. They keep our world safe from self destruction.

These people are unknown, hiding behind the appearance of a very ordinary,  humble life.

How  can  one  decipher  the  mysterious pathways of   the   Supreme   Divine   plan?      When   we   will realize  how  our  lives  are  sustained   and  held  in safety  through  time,  through  the  unfailing devotion, wisdom, and unconditional love of powerful   great   souls,   we  will   be  overwhelmed with wonder and gratitude.

Great  changes  are happening  now.   Never  before has    there    been    such    a   widespread   spiritual search, especially  among many youths, a quest for higher sources of information and a yearning to experience  true reality, true meaning  in our lives.

Here in Israel, spiritual growth is exploding and blossoming  more  than  ever,  in  spite  of  all hindrances.

Negativity   is  being   so  conspicuously  displayed over  our  news  media,  creating  much  insecurity, worry and fear. The real truth is, our destinies  are safely  held in the hands  of a much  greater  Power than any of those towering  forces of destruction.

Supporting women  and children

“Messianic   times  will  be  here  soon  on  the  great merit of women!” The Rebbe declared on several occasions.    He honored women for being good mothers, for being the foundation of spiritual inspiration in the home and for preserving  its sanctity.    He  actively  encouraged  them  to  teach and take charge of schools, evening classes, conferences  and   outreach   activities.      He   gave special   attention   to  children,   giving   rallies   for them   in   gatherings    too   large   to   fit   into   any building, but spilling out into the neighborhood squares  and streets.  He exerted  great  energy  into the creation of hundreds of Jewish schools which would teach Jewish values,with enthusiasm about celebrating    them.    He    ardently     advocated     a

moment of silence for prayer in the public school systems,  a law that unfortunately was not passed.

The power of positive  words

The  Rebbe  always  emphasized the  need  for positive attitudes.  “Think good and things will be good”,   he   would   often   recommend.     He   only spoke in positive terms.    His words were so empowering, they were followed and manifested with joy and faith.

His entire  life was  an extraordinary testimony  to the  value   of  that   belief.     He  urged   the  entire Jewish  people  and  the  world  at  large  to  believe that   Messianic    times   are   at   hand.       He   was adamant  about it, with utmost  conviction  that we are  approaching  these   times   and  that  we  only need   to   prepare   ourselves   for   it   with   prayer, soulful study of the sacred wisdom of the Torah, uplifting  each  other,  being  generous  with  charity and increasing  our deeds of kindness  and care.

The  Rebbe  knew  that  together   we  are  working toward  the  fulfillment   of  a  plan  designed  by  an infinite wisdom.   He knew that our lives are not in vain,  no  matter  what  happens,   no  matter  what our   mistakes   might   be.      He   knew   our   soul’s potential  keeps unfolding  through time.

The  Rebbe’s   own  life  story,  that  rose  from  the very darkest times of persecution, total loss and tragedyto  the powerful  transforming influence  his presence  has created  in the world, is a convincing example  of  what  can  happen  even  in  just  a  few years  when  we  connect  with  the  loving  kindness of  the  Eternal   One.  Millions   of  his  brethren   in Europe and in Russia were being murdered  in evil ways,  yet he steadfastly  and  passionately worked in bringing  more and more goodness  and joy into our world.

Some  people  fear that Messianic  times  will arrive only after a cataclysmic world war that will ravage our world.    They believe  in predictions from different  sources,  from  many  centuries  past.   But the Rebbe,  with his vision inspired  from on High, has assured us that these predictions have already come  to  pass  during   World   War  II.    Certainly what happened during that war fit very well with those  predictions,  as  they  were  described.     It  is now over, thanks to countless  miracles.

Now is a time of awakening.  We are witnessing changes  happening  in our world at a dizzying  and exhilarating pace.   We can  sense  the suffering  of the past and what mankind learned from it is gradually  transforming  our  world,  making  room for  greater  freedom   and  a  more  compassionate

attitude.   There is a shift into a new belief and willingness to grow.     Our  purpose  is to  be successful  and we can do this though  joy, instead of through suffering.

News Reports

The media can be an enormous  power of accurate information, or of doubt, confusion and fear. It penetrates   into  most  every  home   and  to  every corner of the world. Have you ever wondered  why the media,  anywhere  in the world,  tends  to keep their  audience  in a state  of fear and uncertainty? As a rule, most political leaders in power use the media  to keep  their  people  subdued  with  a sense of helplessness and despondency.    Television entertains, distracting viewers from what is happening globally.  Watching news commentary gives  people  a certain  sense  of control.   After  all, they agreed to disagree  with what was happening.

In spite of all this there is a growing demand for internal  and  world  peace.      Usually  these proponents  have  a  gentle  approach,   while  those on a power hungry,  manipulative, destructive way of life, are very loud, assertive  and threatening.

All  of  these   voices   warning   us  of  danger   and future   calamities   can   become   very   oppressive. We are bombarded with these messages over our media    urging    despair     about    the    future    of mankind.

We can receive greater peace and clarity when we remember   that  the  ways  of  goodness,   kindness and holiness are generally discreet, silent, unassuming,  simple,   modest   and  secretive,   just like the ways of the Master of the Universe.   His guidance  is heard in the “still, small voice.”   Since our Creator is still silently holding the Universe  in His hands, we can also assume that our own quiet ways  of  kindness,  wisdom,  joy  and  integrity  can also channel some of the enormous power that protects,  preserves  and renews life in this world.

Each one of us can make a difference!   We can all join together and increase the Light of messianic times.  We can open our hearts and minds to the blessings  of strength,  well being and wisdom from Above.   Blessings  are waiting  to manifest  through us and through our many acts of compassion, friendship,   care  and  loving  service,  through  our trust in and our love of the One who sustains  life at every moment.

Life Saving Turning Points for Israel

Ever  since  the  founding   of  the  State  of  Israel

1948,   much   of  the  world’s   attention   has  been directed  toward  this nation  and its people.  There is  a  certain  puzzlement  and  wonder  at  the  way this  tiny  land,  so  small  that  it    can  hardly  be found on a world map, has survived, completely surrounded by  huge  hostile  countries  where leaders  have  vowed  to “wipe  Israel  off the map”. In spite of six wars, countless terrorist attacks, continuous threats, relentless world political pressure fueled by oil interests, life in Israel is thriving more than ever before.

Once   again,   this   tiny   nation   whose   primary desire is to build a better world with real mutual support for all nations, finds itself pitted against many  dark  forces.  There  are  those  who disseminate fear  and  virulent  hatred  against Israel, especially through the media, with many means to do it.

Many wonder: ”Where does the strength of this people come from? What is their secret?” Most people   living   in  the  Holy   Land   can   sense   an invisible, yet immensely powerful and protective force  surrounding  them.  They  know  it  is  there,

intervening  for  them  through   their  connection with   the  Infinite   One,   Source   of  Life   and   All Good.

The most wondrous  aspect of divine protection  in Israel has been manifested during its most dangerous  periods of wars.

As  an  example   you  may  remember   two  of  the most miraculous times we are privileged  to know

–  crucial   moments   that  allowed   the  people   of

Israel to survive in the Holy Land.

In  1967  in  Egypt,  President   Nasser’s  vociferous voice  over  the  media  was  proclaiming hatred  of Jews  and  declaring   war  against  Israel.  He  had rallied  forces  with Syria,  Jordan  and Iraq – altogether   an  enormous   power  with  more  than one hundred  million  in population  – announcing the end of the State of Israel.

On May 22 1967, Egypt blockaded the Israel Southern   port  of  Eilat  and  the  gulf  of  Akaba. Through  this gulf came vital cargo including  80% of Israel’s oil imports.

Grandiose   military  parades  were  exhibiting   the force of a huge arsenal of weapons.  Four hundred jet  fighters  and  bombers  as  well  as  a  thousand tanks  backed  by  100,000  troops  were  ready  to

take action  and bring devastation to the land and cities of Israel.

The  Egyptians thought  they  were  invincible, yet they didn’t realize there was another Force confronting them,  a much  more  powerful  Force than theirs. It came from the ardent prayers  of all the   souls   connecting  with   the   Compassionate One, Master of Creation. For every Jewish child, mother,   father,   saintly   Master,   Rebbe,   Tzaddik and every caring person in the world in between didn’t  want  to  see  a  reproduction  of  the Holocaust.

There was no time to lose. One morning, June 5, Israeli    jet   fighters    managed    to   enter    Egypt. Flying  low through  previously discovered gaps in the Egyptian radar net on the Western side, they came  in  separate  groups  of  four,  a few  minutes apart. A total surprise.

First they managed  to destroy  the air fields, so as to  prevent   Egyptian   fighter   planes   from  taking off. Then, most amazingly, within  two and a half hours  of bombing, 80% of the Egyptian bombers and  50%  of their  MiGs fighter  jets were suddenly rendered harmless!  On   the   next   day,   breakfast    time, these  pilots  came  in  again  and  continued destroying more  fighter  jets,  military  planes, missile    sites,   radar    installations   until   all   18

Egyptians air bases had been hit. Nineteen  Israeli planes were shot down through  ground  fire.

Next,  The  Israeli   pilots  had  to  face  Jordainian and Syrian planes who were now attacking Israel. They managed  to destroy  their main airfields  and many jet fighters  as well in air combat.

But  there  was  another  formidable enemy  ready to attack. It was encamped in the Sinai desert. Backing them were almost 100,000 troops and a thousand tanks with abundant artillery already springing  into  action.  They  were  entrenched  in huge fortresses.

Aside from that, Nasser called for military forces from Jordan and Lebanon to invade Israel, pretending that he was victorious. In the general confusion, they took action.

At that time, Israel’s  population numbered barely

2 million. The situation looked ominous and terrifying for many. Israel’s army was way outnumbered!  The   oil   supplies   had   been   cut down  to  20%.  All  the  reserves  had  to  be mobilized.   Many   wondered:   “How   were   they going to deal with this?” No one in the world was taking any action to protect  them.

People today are still wondering about these incomparable days.  The  only  thing  we can say is

that   the   Israelis   had   the  masterful  help   from Above. This help gave them the guidance, the courage, the faith and powerful determination to plunge  into  this  impossible  task  of  confronting these     enemy     forces.     This    higher     guidance inspired their leaders with the insights and genial ingenuity  in  taking  decisions   and  forming intricate  plans  of  action.  In  one  night  they organized surprise attacks from four different directions! They fooled  the Egyptians by building wooden  tanks  and  placing  them  in  areas  where the  Egyptians  expected   Israelis  to  appear. Somehow their maneuvers managed  to dislocate and confuse  the opposite  commanders to a state of panic, causing their armies to fall apart! Most commanders   fled   back   to   Cairo,   abandoning their troops. The retreat turned into a rout.

After 96 hours, the war in Sinai was over!

The   events   of   these   battles   call   to   mind   the amazing victories of King David under God’s guidance, only on a grander  scale.

The Power that superbly orchestrates life-saving events  was there with the Israeli  soldiers,  officers and  commanders, strengthening and  guiding them.

As a rule, Israelis  would  much rather  make peace with their enemies than kill them when being attacked.    Peace   and   mutual    support    is   their

deepest  wish  and  hope  and  they  seek  every avenue to create it.

Five thousand Egyptian  soldiers, including 500 officers,  were taken prisoners to exchange  for the

19 Israeli pilots who had been shot down and captured   in  Egypt.   They   were   given   food   and water and transported to the Suez Canal, where Egyptian  boats  came  to ferry  them  home.  Many of those who eluded  capture  and tried to get back on their own died of dehydration in the desert.

These  two  days  were  followed  by  another  series of  astounding,  inexplicable  events   in  the northern   front.   After  first  attacking   Israel,   the Syrian and Jordanian soldiers soon became confused and demoralized, for lack of confident leaders   with  them,  and  were  running   for  their lives.  Doors  opened  for the Israeli  forces  to walk in. Considering the risks taken, mercifully, in this area  very  few  lives  were  lost,  either  Jewish   or Muslim.

This  war  could  have  created  enormous disasters for millions  on each side. Yet, miraculously it was all over within Six Days!

The  news  of  these  awesome   events  stunned  the world, strengthening the hearts of all the Jewish people,  as  well  as  all  their  friends  scattered   all over   the   globe.   These   were   days   of  immense

relief, euphoric joy, renewed faith and deep gratefulness for the Almighty’s hand of Divine Intervention, whose Power manifested so masterfully. Deep gratefulness was sent to the pilots,   officers,   commanders  and  soldiers,   who were heroic enough  to risk their lives many times over  to defend  their  people.  They  had  chosen  to go    through     years    of    intense     training     and hardships to be prepared  to face the enemy intelligently and effectively.

~~~~~~~~
Here are other awesome  miraculous events of divine intervention:
In the 1980’s,  Syria managed  to take control  over
Lebanon. It was infiltrating countless  thousands of PLO in this previously neutral  country.  The Lebanese population was tyrannized and abused in cruel ways. Their country  was used as a military  base to get at Israel. For two years the Syrians  were planning  an air attack on Israel. Israeli villages  were being bombarded. Israel warned  the PLO, to no avail.
Israeli jets flew in to destroy  some PLO bases. Within  seconds  Syrian MiGs jet fighters  attacked. An air battle took place followed  by a few others of most dramatic  air encounters. Unbelievably, within 6 days, one by one, 86 Syrian MiGs were destroyed by the Israeli F15 and F16 jet fighters! And after each battle these few Israeli jet
fighters  returned  to their base, intact!
Even the military  experts  cannot explain  how these extraordinary events happened. These moments have been well documented. The truth is, the Israeli pilots were also in awe. Some confidentially reported  that every split second motion  of their hand directing  their plane had been guided.  They confided  that a mysterious presence  was there at their side during combat.
As secular  Israelis,  they soon turned to their spiritual  roots. They became  observant of their religious  laws, after experiencing this blessed unique guidance  during their battles in the sky.
What is the secret?
Our Sages  and great Masters  have shown  us how to really  care  for others.  They  also  have  inspired us to connect  in trust with the Supreme  Almighty One  with  renewed   commitment,  gratitude   and love.  When  we do this, we experience inner strength  and  peace  within  and  this  allows  peace from Heaven  to appear in our world. We all share a common  destiny.  Peace unfolds  in silent,  secret pathways  of  protection  and  increasing abundance, manifesting in ingenious ways.
For   millennia  a  great   battle   has   been   raging between the forces of darkness and the power of Light.  The  Jewish  people  have  been  standing  on the   front    lines    over    and   over,    through    the
millennia, with  the  mission  to  defend  the  cause of Light.  Their connection with the Almighty  and their  willingness  to  be  of  service   and  sacrifice their  lives  for  their  people   are  powerful   forces that bless the entire world and mankind.
We each have a part in inviting  divine  protection for our people and our world. Powerful higher energies   of  blessings   are  brought  forth  through our eager connection in awe and Love with the Master  of Creation,  Source  of all  Light  and  Joy. They  also come  through  our courageous willingness to protect  and serve  others  with  care and attention. They come through the heroic willingness of those who stand on the front lines. They allow this peace we are so longing for to manifest  in our situations.
This  peace  can happen  even  if this  merit  is built by only  a minority.  We  can  become  more  aware of how God responds in manifold ways to every prayer   and  action  coming   from  a  loving  heart. We   are   treasured,  supported  and   honored   in ways  beyond  our  comprehension.     This  is especially true for every person on earth who is yearning  for and  working  toward  times  of peace and justice, times of higher wisdom and caring between  people.
Today’s media tends to loudly proclaim in every detail all the dangers  and problems we are facing
on  our  planet.  Most  of them  are  presented with no   suggestions  whatsoever  on  how   to  resolve them.   We   have   a  responsibility  and   a  choice where  to  put  our  attention  and  invest  our  time. We     can    decide    instead,    to    investigate   and discover             all    the    miraculous,    silent,     divine interventions  we  are  all  benefiting  from   every day.   We   will   continue    to   benefit   from   them through  our ever deepening commitment to what is truly  effective  and  eternally  valuable,  and allowing  our life to flow with that.
Most  often  protection comes  in spite  of our mistakes  and imperfections. Sometimes it occurs through  the mistakes  of our enemies.  Who knows what  will  unfold?  God  has  many  surprises awaiting  us.
The  Jewish   people   have  been  praying   through the centuries for real peace. Our prayers are now ascending stronger  than  ever.  May  every  nation find prosperity with more awareness and kindly ways   of  life.   May   our   Muslim   neighbors  and cousins   realize   that   virulent   hatred,   especially when  disseminated among  many  millions,  is the very  worst  thing  they  can  create  for  themselves. This  inevitably brings  them  to  disaster  in  some form   or   another.    May   they   awaken    and   be blessed   with  inner  peace.  May  they  be  uplifted with  the  joy  of  true  service   of  God,  with  awe, wisdom  and acceptance of all people and nations.
May  their  coming  generation be raised  with happier   dreams,   values  and  knowledge.  This  is our cherished hope and prayer.
Does your mind tell you that this is an impossible dream?  Don’t despair.  Leave it to the Almighty’s ingenuities to create changes.  Remember,
nothing  is impossible to Him.
There is an ancient  prophesy, “The knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters  cover the sea bed”. Many hold to that dream and expect miracles  even greater  than those already demonstrated so far.
But in the meantime, our first responsibility is to stand  firm in Israel  and protect  each other.  Also, it is up to each of us to invite  into our lives God’s divine protection for our people and our world. Powerful,    higher     energies     of    blessings     are brought  forth through  our eager  connection with the Infinite  Master  of the Universe, Source  of All Wisdom.  They also manifest  through  our courageous   willingness   to   protect    and   serve others   with   care   and   attention.  In  Israel   and abroad,  on every  Jewish  holiday  or in every  time of need,  people  join  together  in heartfelt  prayer. This commitment is the power that builds civilizations and allows them to endure.
Today  mankind  is facing  more danger  of massive destruction  than  ever  through   nuclear  weapons at hand. We need to remember that there is no power  stronger  than  the  Force  of  the  Almighty. At this very moment, great powers are at play to prevent   the  extermination  of  countless   people. God will not allow it.
Through  the stories  in Masters  and Miracles,  you are welcome  to decipher  some of the secret  plans of the Supreme  Master  of Creation.  This  book  is here  for  you  to  receive  increasing  joy,  strength and confidence regarding the future of Israel, mankind  and our beautiful  planet.
